I was talking to my mom, and she said if I ever do want to start boxing she'll just call up my dad's friend Johnny who's got punching bags and all this stuff. Before I was i interested in boxing he brought over a lot of things, like some bag with water in it, a punching bag, some gloves, head gear, and some other stuff.
It's good that your family is behind you, however don't touch the bag, or even try to shadow box until you have receive the proper instruction from a qualified trainer. Not an uncle, friend or somebody who may have done it before. a real trainer who can send you down the right path and start you off on the right foot. The biggest mistake people make is hitting a heavy bag and shadow boxing at home thinking they are getting ready for the experience. This more often than not developes bad habits that can take valuable training time to break. Learn the right way from the begining and let every trip to the gym count. Another piece of advice that was given to me when I started. Get yourself inot shape first. You will thank yourself. Start running, Get up early, very early. I mentioned in my previous post I'm up at 3:30am doing my road work. try to run a mile under 9 min. if you can do it easily add some sprints every so often for 50 meters or so. Stop do some pushups, lunges, body weight squats. Build up your endurance. When you can do these and have the mental strength to push yourself to get up early and strive to reach this goal, go to the gym work with a trainer take your time at firs to really soak in what he is saying. Talk to the other boxers especially the ones who seem to be the best there they have the most to teach. You have to modify your diet to. Lose the sugars, cut down on the fat calories. Drink ass loads of water. You are about to go through the most intense training program there is your body needs to be a peak nutrition levels your diet can kill your work in the gym so it is important to eat right. Oh yeah no alchohol. Soda, or any other b.s. drink Water is going to have to be your new best friend.
When you have learned the skills and your back and shoulder muscles are in the shape you need them to be in. Spend a lot of time then with the heavy bags, speed bags & shadow boxing working on drills and combinations your trainer shows you. Stay with in schooling like homework don't get too fancy but train hard with intensity.
You'll love this if you are cut from the right cloth. Remember it's not what you do in the ring. Its what you do miles away from the crouds and public eye. Its what you do in the gym and on the road and at home even how and how much you sleep will have it's effect.
Don't be one of those guys who rush in the gym thinking they are the next Rocky Balboa and quit after the firs week. Mentaly prepare yourself for the work and the pain. Make sure you want this and want it bad. "I question this about you cuz you seem unsure" It ultimately doesn't matter what we here at boxingscene say. The same goes for your peers. You say you have heart which is good, but you will be hurt in this sport. You will suffer the pain of being hit and the drawn out pain of training. And believe me your game of bloody knuckles has is not even in the same work neither is the fights you may have been in.
          Good luck

I'm wondering why this Book is the only thing you have to reference your advice to. Try gaining some experience. and you are the one trying to call some of us "keyboard warriors"
Joe didn't even write the book somebody else did for him. At that all he can do is speak of his experience. Not everybody elses. Please for your own sake Potatoes. don't live your life based on this book. Write your own story for gods sake.

Doubt that. He'd have a little more clout one would think. I think he's delusional and fixated on a legond. Thinks he'll become Smokin Joe by using his book.

with all that outta shape stuff your worried about you get all taht when you train. like coreano said champions are made not born. infact you seem in a better position than some of us having an uncle taht boxed professional as your trainer. your left will come in time. it actually doesn't matter to much what kinda shape your in when you first start your there to get into shape. so dont worry.
