    Vertical jab vs Horizontal jab

Hi guys, i hope all of u are going good.

My question today is about the main difference between horizontal and vertical jab, why vertical jab arent commonly used in boxing anymore ? Some guys have told me once that vertical jab is less powerful and can cause more injuries. Personally i feel more comfortable with the vertical jab....

What u guys think about it ?

Hello, I'm doing good. Hope you are as well.

The vertical jab is great in my opinion. It is a lot more narrow than a normal (horizontal jab) which means that it can split through your opponents guard a lot easier, and then you can follow up with the right hand after.

I haven't had any injuries from punching that way personally and the power is slightly less for me but power isn't everything.

If you watch Pacquiao, he will sometimes use the vertical jab to split the opponents guard to go on to land those fast combos.

I haven't made enough posts to be allowed to put in a URL, but type in Fight exchanges Pacquiao jab on youtube and go to 2:33 on the video and it will explain very well.

The vertical jab just seems a lot more unnatural for me. I feel like I’d hyperextend my elbow if I threw it too much but that’s probably muscle memory from trying to throw it like a regular jab. I know I wouldnt, but it is odd for me. The “regular” jab just seems more relaxed and snappy in nature.

The vertical jab AND vertical uppercut are very useful to break through the guard though, especially when someone is already covering up. You can also throw the vertical jab really stiff and short. I think they’re great punches in the arsenal.

As ironpad above me said, Pac is very good with it and throws it in between combos. Sometimes you’ll see guys throw it vertical and try to pull the arm down on the way back to create space for the other punch. Tyson Fury throws a vertical jab in between regular ones as well

I know what an up-jab is, but an actual vertical jab just sounds like a very awkwardly delivered lead-hand uppercut to me.

I believe they are talking about how the fist lands not the trajectory of the punch. Thumb on top being vertical, on bottom being horizontal.

I saw that uppercut type of jab being thrown on a recent fight, but now I cant remember who was throwing it. Might have been Stephen Fulton.
