    Building up muscles for boxing.

Okay, hello this is my first thread posted here I just recently joined this site. I was just wondering, as a 6"4 guy, should I be building up muscles for boxing? Because today with my trainer and a couple more students did a speed power test, and I got the least miles per hour, I got 23 milers per hour, and I felt as tall as the grass you feel me. I know you mostly don't need muscles for boxing, as it decreases your punching speed. But I was just wondering.

    Thanks in advance

With training what weight do you think you would fight at (even if you have no intention to fight) most people are restricted by the limit of the weight class so packaging on bulk can be an issue.

Keeping things and the science simple, muscles need oxygen, the bigger the muscles the more oxygen needed, what that means... You need cardio to fuel them, big muscles with crap cardio means you gas very quick.

Personally I've never really done anything more than pylometric push ups (push-ups with claps in between) pull ups, sit ups, and TRX suspension training exercises. Sometimes some shadow boxing with 1kg Dumbbells

    Just squares for the legs

Muscles are unimportant in boxing for the most part. The guys who are the stockiest aren't usually the strongest. The strongest fighters are usually the ones that don't cut a lot of weight and are conditioned. Mayweather is a small welterweight yet sparring partners and former opponents have said how strong he is.

Grappling and bag work are probably the two best things for building muscle and strength that is applicable to boxing.

          3 or 4 sets of 25 pushups

3 or 4 sets of as many sit ups as you can do.

          30-35 minutes of jogging.

According to Joe Frazier that's all you need to get in decent shape to start boxing.

And don't forget to get on the PEDs if you want to be like Joshua.

No one here is scared of weights. If you want to do them then do them.

But they aren't necessary and I for one like to remind people that to take up this sport a few basics and some hard work are all that's needed.

eah not meaning u directly, but have seen some nonsense on this topic time and time again in this section. can someone actually provide some evidence on how weight training 'slows you down', either some study or some reasonable logical scientific explanation as to why? Being stronger in big compound lifts and explosive exercises is only going to be advantageous.

Except make him gas by the 5th rd...

Lifting weights shortens the muscle up. They should only be used if you absolutely can't bulk up by eating more and doing calisthenics. Even then, adding weights to calisthenics exercises is superior to just lifting weights.

Put a 45 lb plate on your back when doing push ups. Hang a plate between your legs on dips. Same with pull ups.

Lifting weights for legs is fine as long as you don't go crazy with it. I prefer Cleans and Power Cleans for my legs over squats. They're funner and harder too.
