It wouldn't because of training with the heavy 20oz gloves I don't beleive. Either he has natural speed or doing some other speed training to improve it.

This is the Counter Punch bag that Calzaghe claimed was the secret to his handspeed and stamina.

You don't have to take this as the gospel truth because it's only another opinion to thousands of opinions out there, so just keep an open mind and think about it.

In the past we've tried shadow boxing with weights, thinking it'll develop our punch faster. Some are still doing it even up to 5kg of weights. But as the science found out about the muscle memory in doing weight training....Well.. it should worked similar way to punching with heavier objects, because the muscles will remember it. It adapst to the slower speed when punching with the weight when fully contractration. Especially when you are starting to fatigue, it remembers when you are struggling with the heavyweights when punching. So it's possible that it may work the opposite rather than speeds it up. Of couse your hand feels lighter when the weight comes off, and to a period of time makes your arm stronger, but by no mean makes it faster because of the muscle memory. So if you do workrate and fight assimilation at the gym, using the bag or pads (counting amount of fast powershots etc), in my opinion should be done with 10oz to assimilate the identical weight whe you fight. In sayting this, if Calzaghe has hands problems, it's explain why he's wearing heavy padded gloves, instead of a smaller gloves. Only those who has constantly hands problem understand this. But like I said, if you thnk this make sense than try it, if you think its BS than don't do it.

This is inline with my thinking.

In baseball, some studies show that using a lighter ball, actually helps increase the speed a normal weight ball can be thrown at.

Also, some sprinters use over speed training i.e. they are pulled along by an elastic cord attached to a vehicle. This increases the speed at which they move their legs and this results in increase speed when not being towed.

This supports what you are saying mate.

I do think heavier gloves / weights can be useful for increasing endurance. Although I prefer resistance bands for this.

If the above examples are applicable to boxing, in theory, we should be using lighter than competition gloves or no gloves at all for developing speed.

Obviously, this goes against conventional thinking. I must admit, I am still fairly open minded about this though.
