    Problems with smaller fighters.

    Hi,
    Now i ve trained in my gym for a couple of weeks/ months, i work a lot and my coach doesn't believe me when i said i never boxed before. LoL

    Whatever, i like to bob and wheave, and to box in a defensive way like James Toney does. When i spar with big guys, it's very easy for me, but when i spar with smaller dudes, it's much harder to bob and wheave, and i have to use my jab and to stand more on my back foot or to build everything from a strong jab and fighting in an agressive way. That works but it bores me to do things i don't like.
    The guys i spar with are 2 pro ( 1 super-lightweight, 1 cruiserweight) and 8 or 10 amateurs( some of 'em have a lot of fights but i don't know there weight, but there all between 160 and Heavyweight).

    Considering i am 1m79 and 154 pounds my weight class will be full of small guys, but i feel i can use my favourite style with big guys. It makes me think that i should fight in bigger weight classes.
    I start fighting at the end of the year, my trainer said.

    Do you think i should fight at my natural weight or move up to bigger weight classes?

    Who is(was) in the same case and what did you do?

    How do you fight smaller guys when your style is more of a "old school" style ?

    stick the jab and move, stay on the outside if u have more reach and catch him coming in. other wise just brawl it out.

          They'll run right into your uppers, dont stay on their range thou.

            when they try to get inside nail them with your jab, every time. Then start working your combinations, and stick and move!! If im fighting a smaller guy thats has to get inside i don't throw any combos without a jab first.

              I'd reckon start at your natural weight and take it from there.

                as an in fighter I know what I hate for a boxer to do. I have to agree that the best thing you can do is jab consistently and step to their left (if they are orthodox) and to their right (if southpaw.) Stay in the center of the ring if you can, and waltz them if you can. Jab a lot and be ready for them to slip the jab and mix in the outside hooks. Let them walk into the uppers and get use to jabbing while moving back/left/right. When you have them getting demotivated start the 1-2's and the 1-1-2's. Jab to the chest/stomach to keep them honest. If you predict the dash step into your jab and pop them with the 2 right after, sidestep->back out and reset. If they get in try to clench and reset the distance or brawl it out but make sure you know what they are trying to do. (typically deAmato style combos, hooks to the body and combos ending in outside hooks/crosses.)

                It is a tough match if they have their crap together, but you have to out think 'em and keep moving. Don't let them predict your movements and corner you.

                    Generally speaking a taller fighter should use his range and not let the shorter fighter come on the inside as the short guy won't be able to do much if you keep him at the end of your jab.

                    But thats subjective, cause you can be a tall fighter and still be good on the inside.
