Why did HBO try to convince us Chocolatito was P4P #1?

Because at that time, Chocolatito was signing with them...

And no way the people knows who the **** he was...

But yeah, he never was the real #1.

You'd be hard pressed when Roman was tip top to find any dork P4P rankings that didn't have Roman top 3, with most having him #1 & idk if any list existed that didn't have him top 5 & if they did they were a Roman-hater or HBO-hater probably.
True, and most probably admitted that it was a shaky #1 anyway.

But then 2016 ended up being a pretty weak year for boxing where fighters in position to take the spot from RG largely didn't do much and others who did weren't especially decisive.

But to me it seems like they came out of left field with him as P4P #1. There was no ascension to the top. Just boom, number 1.

Max and the gang are eating a lot of crow right now.

Anybody that signs a contract with them becomes automatic Top 10 p4p

But... to be fair I think Gonzalez had a credible case. Everybody looses eventually no need to smear a fighter for daring to be great. More than I can say for some of their other fighters

Well I mean the guy was the #1 guy in 3 divisions wasn't he? Since when is that not much? I mean there are lil guy divisions & I'm not the guy to be hyping lil guy divisions, but still thats how boxing is setup currently & he did it & most who even win multiple weight division belts are seldom the #1 guy in more then 2 of them.

I know boxing fans LOVE to play retroactive history when a great fighter loses to make him not sh^t or just some degree of less great then he was at some previous moment in time, but these things happen in boxing to great fighters all the time. This game changes on a dime & greatness is always on shakier ground than most cats wanna believe.

i didnt have him number 1 but his CV in terms of world class wins was as good as anyone. Wasnt just HBO who rated him highly. Could argue why are people trying to ram ward down our throats as p4p number 1 after a robbery win and a fight where instead of docking him points for illegal shots they ended up awarding him a stoppage win? Thats a legitimate pound for pound number 1 but gonzalez wasnt?

It feels like he jumped the line and became #1 after Floyd retired. Feels like he didn't climb up the ladder and was just pushed up.

I think there was no thought but into this post.

But I'm going to take a guess and say maybe because he was P4P #1.

For a group of boxing fans you guys sure do ask a lot of dumb questions.

You don't retroactively get downgraded because of losses.

That homie that stopped him hurt my feelings, his Arguello connection gave me this false belief in something.

There's always an Aron Pryor out there ready, willing and able to put a mofo in check, never believe your own hype.

That's what Jhonny explained to me.

HBO machine was in full effect to pump up foreign guys like Gonzalez, Golovkin, and Kovalev in order to find the next Pacquiao. BUT, all the blame can't be put on HBO as almost every credible list had him #1. Many people didn't follow the smaller divisions as much (myself included) so we just kind of rode with him being one of the top guys due to lack of exposure and since boxing hipsters were swearing this guy was the next Finito Lopez. Once I started to see his fights I honestly didn't see all the hoopla behind him and was dumbfounded how this guy was being ranked #1 and being compared to Floyd. Don't get me wrong, a terrific little fighter but certainly not a fighter who would be favored to defeat every other fighter if they all weighed the same (pound for pound basis). I rewatched him struggle with a green Estrada and then beat a lot of old and not so good fighters. Then Cuardas boxed his butt off and this Thai finished him off brutally and I saw the same fighter since I started watching him.

So I attribute him being considered #1 to:

                    1. HBO machine hyping up foreign flavor due to losing many top level US fighters on their network.
                    2. Lack of exposure and a certain mystic created around a top fighter in the little known divisions.
                    3. A shaky pound for pound list.

Fair enough. I didn't mean to suggest he was a bum, just that he wasn't in as comfortable a #1 spot as, say Floyd Mayweather was for most of his time in that position.
