Daniel Geale gears up for Cotto fight

Just days out from his WBC Middleweight title fight against Miguel Cotto, former champion Daniel Geale says his focus is on getting in to “perfect condition”.

The 34-year-old, of Harrington Park, has been training out of Lyndhurst, New Jersey, ahead of the fight at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, on Sunday, June 7.

Geale said his approach was to focus on himself.

“The game plan is to go in and fight my fight,” he said. “It’s not to get ****** in. It’s not to get caught up in what he [Cotto] is doing. It’s to do what I do best.”

Geale’s last fight in New York ended in a disappointing three-round KO loss to Kazakh Gennady Golovkin at Madison Square Garden in July.
Like Golovkin, Cotto is a fierce, aggressive fighter with 32 of his 39 wins coming via knockout.

But Geale said Cotto’s ferocity didn’t worry him and his own agility was a plus.

“Cotto has trouble in stages against guys that move and use their reach. He knows that’s what I’m going to be doing and he’s going to be trying to counter that with aggression and coming forward,” he said.

“I’m going to use my abilities and not get caught up in his game plan.”

Cotto, of Puerto Rico, has fought the likes of Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather who recently battled each other in what was called the ‘Fight of the Century’.

“This is going to be a huge fight for me. Fighting a guy like Miguel who’s fought some of the greatest fighters is going to be a great test,” Geale said.

“I want this one badly. It’s something that we have wanted for a while and I’m extremely excited. I’ve got guys like Gary Shaw and my team at the Grange and they’re working very hard behind the scenes. I’m just going to worry about my job and they do their job greatly.”

The card will start from 11.30am AEST on Sunday, June 7, on MAIN EVENT.

3 fights left on his contract... I think he'll do those three and then hang it up.

Hopefully Geale show up around 160 and gives up most of his purse for a chance to actually win.

Cotto vs Geale fight odds: Miguel Cotto at -600, Daniel Geale at +400

Saturday, June 6, Bloody Elbow presents fight coverage of Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale. HBO World Championship Boxing Cotto vs. Geale airs live on HBO this Saturday, June 6 with a fight time of 10:30 p.m. ET / PT. Bloody Elbow will have live fight coverage, including results and discussion.

The big fight on the night, and the only fight being featured on the HBO broadcast, sees true Middleweight champion Miguel Cotto look to make the first defense of the belt he won last year from Sergio Martinez. He takes on the challenge of Daniel Geale. Cotto comes in to the fight on an impressive two fight win streak after losing back to back fights to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout in 2012. Geale likewise is 2-2 in his last four, having lost to Gennady Golovkin a year ago and since bounced back with a rebound win over Jarrod Fletcher. So who steps in to the ring the favorite?

Here are the latest odds courtesy of Bovada:

                      Miguel Cotto -600
                      Daniel Geale +400

Cotto is the favorite - a $600 bet will win you $100, while for Geale, a $100 bet will net you $400.

Nothing too surprising about this line. Cotto is the obvious favorite, and should be by a comfortable margin. But that loss to Trout is recent enough history that he's not going to get a wildly high line against a notoriously tough, skilled fighter like Geale.

What do you say - worth a risk on the underdog here, or is Cotto easy money?
