The only way to get the leneal title without beating the current champ if he moves out of the division is by earning it by beating all the top guys in your division. It's more a universal recognition with no physical trophy handed out. I could be wrong but I think that's the way it works.

Nah, if the lineage is vacant it starts when #1 fights #2. A new lineage then begins.

Im a Cotto fan but a boxing fan also. Cotto needs to defend the MW championship against a legitimate opponent or just give it up

I think that all Cotto fan's me included would agree that if he is stripped of his WBC title for not fighting GGG, he would be relinquishing all other accolades at MW. But he will always be the first PR fighter to win titles in four weight divisions.

Ima big cotto fan but being the first Rican with four classes is meaningless to me unless he at least defends the title. Win or lose. Getting title and the. Dropping is leave a sour taste in my mouth

That said I feel a lil Hipocritical because if cotto took the title from ggg I think I may not feel the same.

Yeah that's the Ring. But the lineage isn't owned by the Ring. Usually they go hand in hand though. But let's say Cotto goes down to 154, the Ring strips his Ring belt, and then Golovkin fights #2 for said Ring belt and wins. There will be those that will say Cotto is still the lineal champ because he never lost at 160 or retired.

The Ring don't own the concept of lineal titles, but it's their lineages and lineal titles that most fans accept as the authentic versions. And if Cotto relinquishes the WBC MW belt and goes back down to 154, or if he hangs on to it but doesn't defend against an actual MW for 18 months, the Ring will cease to recognise him as lineal MW champ

I agree 100%. Lineal titles are of no use to anybody except champions who want to duck their mandatories and promoters who want to carry on selling a Duck to the fans as the "real champ" of his division.
