For the record: You can't be saved by the bell.

Mares was clearly out. He was sitting on a stool for 2-3 minutes after spending one minute on the canvas after the KO and clearly not fit to continue the fight. Do you think the one minute rest in the corner would help him for the 2nd round? I don't.

This is the type of KO that will make you or destroy you. You can learn from it or it can make you second-doubt yourself for the rest of your career. It was a pretty brutal KO and time will tell how Mares can recuperate from it.

Mares has heart but it's these devastating one-punch KOs that'll turn your career 180 degrees.

GB and Mares' team need to give Mares time to "heal" and don't rush things. Give him a couple of tune-up fights and then let him fight for a belt again.

He should have been given a full count, he was trying to get up. As the defending champion, he earned that.

Yeah, and some refs mistake it for the end of the round or don't hear it at all. They aren't always paying attention - their main concern is looking a fighter in the face and trying not to look too ridiculous while wearing Super Mario bros plumber clothes.

both where good stoppages, a ref shouldn't take the time of the round into account at all.

Chavez - Taylor was a horrible stoppage. He was winning the fight. The fight was in the last round with a few seconds to go and he deserved the opportunity to finish the fight and have it go to the scorecards. He took one flash knockdown and got up immediately. This idea that next punch would have been killed with the next punch is Highly speculative and just justification for those who wanted Chavez to win.

Mares took two knockdowns. That is quite a difference. He was in the first round. That is quite a difference. He was not winning the fight. That is quite a difference. There is zero comparison between those two stoppages.

Yes they can, in the final round.

protect the fighter is the rule of today. mares was one punch away from being hurt. as a philly/nj guy I know taylor and he was really hurt from the chavez fight. he was never the same. that fight destroyed him and his career. how many times was he ko'd after that fight. chaves a second time, terry Norris, chrisanto espana. all brutal ko's. after the chaver fight we could see his health not the same. he never looked well even seemed like he was sick. now here's my opinion and everyone is going to disagree with this. unless you were actually at the fight sitting in the corner you have no clue. the fight should have been stopped around the 8-9 round. yes he was winning but you have to let a guy fight for another day. we were begging for the corner to stop it with our body language because none of us had the GUTS to just tell the corner to wave it off. real ****

There is a HUGE difference between the two. First and foremost Taylor/Chavez was in the last round, with a few seconds left, that Taylor was clearly winning! Mares was blasted out in the FIRST round. If Taylor/Chavez wasn't in the final seconds of the final round, I'd have no complaining but it was and should of not been stopped.

BOTH stoppages were lame....Reese is normally legit....one of my favorite refs but he pulled the plug on this one too early IMHO
