I hate to focus on Tyson, but the fact is that he captured people's imagination. He was intimidating, knocked much larger men out in ferocious fashion, and actually made you wonder if he might kill someone in the ring. As I said before, I think some of his mystique came from the juvenile persona he exuded in the early days. Before Tyson became known as a loose-cannon psycho, he was actually regarded as marketable to the American main******.
I know it's hard to believe, given his current image, but Mike Tyson did a Pepsi commercial and starred in a commercial for his own video game. Can you see Floyd gaining that kind of notoriety? Manny might have a slight chance at it. Whatever the case, Tyson's an example of the kind of popularity the right fighter can aspire to.
And, yes, I agree that Pac-May would be huge. In fact, a fight like that has the potential to popularize either fighter to an unforeseen degree.
