Mayweather: "Right now, I'm totally focused on Cotto, but I will be watching Khan."
When Floyd Mayweather Jr takes centre stage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday, he will give Miguel Cotto his undivided attention. But the man who regards himself as the best boxer in history will have one eye on Amir Khan, whose turn in the spotlight arrives at the nearby Mandalay Bay on 19 May in his rematch with Lamont Peterson.
If Khan wins impressively to regain his world light-welterweight title from the American, he will put it aside and move up a division in pursuit of a massive payday against Mayweather.
"Right now, I'm totally focused on Cotto," Mayweather said, "but I will be watching Khan."
Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Khan's American promotional partners, Golden Boy Promotions (who are co-promoting Mayweather-Cotto), said: "It is a fight we are looking at and perhaps it would be best if Khan had two fights at welterweight. But if he looks sensational against Lamont Peterson it could happen this year."
Khan and his stable-mate Manny Pacquiao return from their training camp in the Philippines on Saturday night, just as Mayweather and Cotto are contesting the Puerto Rican's WBA light-middleweight title.
Mayweather, 35, said this week he wants to fight "another three or four times" but agreed "I'm running out of opposition."
