It's kinda sad too. Marquez at age 38 and Hopkins at age 47 still have better footwork than Floyd.

Yes. They constantly pivot/side stepping around the ring without resting on the ropes like Floyd has done. Marquez demonstrated the best form of lateral movement against Pacquiao.

Mayweather lays on the ropes because he wants to, not because he has to.

I don't think any version of Marquez' footwork is better than any version of Mayweather's. It's clearly superior, IMO.

As for Hopkins, prime for prime of course it's arguable. An almost 50 year old Hopkins? Not so much.

It's not a matter of them fighting off their back foot because we know they are three of the best at doing it, but when it comes to footwork movement, I think those two are better at it than Floyd. It's a good thing Floyd is good at fighting at close range, and still be able to measure where each punches are coming at him from as well as using his upper body to not getting hit.

Nowadays, I'd say Floyd does it[lays on the rope] because it's an effective tactic that he has mastered, but i also think he does it to rest his legs by taking a breather.

Fighting at closer range and getting into the positions he does whilst being some what aggressive takes great footwork also.

Despite popular believe/myth, Mayweather's footwork has been exceptional in his last 3 fights.

Exceptional at cutting off the ring effectively? Definitely. Exceptional at fighting off the back off? Not so much.

He shut Ortiz down pretty effectively the few times he had to move backwards.

And other than 5 times or less, he hasn't had to fight off the back foot in his last 3 fights. Why would he move backwards when he can stand right infront of his opponent and dominate them?

If he were to be forced backwards by a fighter then you would see him move backwards and dominate his opposition.

People think Mayweather has no choice but to move forward or stand still. It's bull****.

He hasn't had to. Big difference.
