Another idea for the next season.

Why don't we pick a SINGLE fight every week, for 52 weeks?

Each time, the one with the widest range of possibilities - the most balanced, if you will - independent from its level (title fight or not).

I think this would warrant the necessary continuity to the game, less studying for the non-hardcore pickers, and less work for Koba.

In principle I like the idea of consistency but sadly the vagueries of scheduling make this an unlikely proposition - some weeks there'll be literally no meaningful fights or even no televised fights at all, whereas other weeks will fall that you got 2, three or even more world level or even P4P talents squaring off. More realistic would be perhaps aiming for a set number of fightsd each calender month - say 6 or 8 decide in advance the previous month, but I suspect even then you're gonna run into problems either meeting or keeping within quota depending on the time of year and other random scheduling factors. I do think we should try to come up with some system to ensure a bit more consistency though and definitely a more consistent longer range Pick Em schedule so people know what's coming up - I keep trying to do it but somehow never manage to keep it up for long.

Oh ****... never got round to actually officially cancelling the thread for the 13th and it got stickied... my bad. In theory could still run it I guess but given the outsize odds and possible confusion over the mixed messages reckon I gotta pull it anyway.

Okay gentlemen this weeks thread - for the 13th August - is officially cancelled.

What day are we on? Saturday? OK reckon I'm gotta be off again probably Monday eve or Tuesday morning (Northern Green Gathering this time, although it's in fkn Lincolnshire which ain't remotely Northern to my mind, bloody hippies!) but I'm gonna be busy next coupla days so I'll look to getting next weeks thread up at some point today.

Was originally thinking about the top 3 from Jeddah but I just noticed we also got Gutierrez vs Garcia (#2 and #5 at 130Lbs per TBRB respectively) from Florida for the WBA world - yes I know it ain't a real title but the rankings of the fighters gets it in - got fairly tight odds too with Roger as a +200 'dog. The we also got the WBO full title at Feather on the line between Navarrette and Baez from San Diego and although the odds are pretty wide (Baez is currently hovering around +600) they're no worse than the Jeddah undercard fights and the title gets priority.

Puello vs Akhmedov should be a good one too - close odds (Botizhon's hovering about a -200 fave) and the WBA 'world' on the line - and of course Akhmedovs sole loss was a robbery so he should be ranked far higher than he actually is, and I also guess if you've got nostalgia for the 'Teens there's Broner vs Figueroa.. although the days of relevence of both are probably in the past I guess the winner is likely to get another tilt at a title or at least a semi-meaningful fight next... Broner's coming in about -220 FWIW

Also gonna cut and paste this thread minus the BigPoppa shout out onto the masterthread for the record and so we got somewhere to comment on the schedule for the 20th if this thread gets zapped.

All the best gents and apologies for the confusion

        K

So next week - the 20th August - we're looking at a 3 fight weekend

          Usyk vs Joshua
          Roger Gutierrez vs Hector Garcia
          Navarrete vs Baez

As ever comments or alternative suggestions are welcomed but those 3 are the clear highest ranked / most significant titlewise... I also like Hrgovic vs Zhelei and Puelo vs Akhmedov and even Broner vs Figueroa and Mundo vs Bauderlique could be more fun and competitive than most might think (Bauderlique's fairly tidy despite the dumbass KO loss to Lepei back in '17 when he was dominating)

Given that we skipped two consecutive weeks, we could run a 7-fight bonanza and include them all...

ha ha... you wish. I'd do it if they were real top quality fights or there were full title on the line but not for these. Reckon 3s a good number given that we missed a coupla weeks although I guess we could go for 4 max... it's just none of the others have titles on the line or match 2 highly ranked fighters.... guess if I really had to choose a 4th it'd be Puelo vs Akhmedov for the WBA secondary...

              ....

Ah ****.... just noticed that TBRB and Ring have both Mundo (#5, #6) and Bauderlique (#10, #10) ranked at 175 and it's 4 star per Boxrec which means that one's in too per our fight selection criteria....

Ooookay... so 4 fights it is next week. Get that up this eve.

Looking ahead it's staying kinda quiet, Reckon we do Pedraza vs Commey on the 27th, 3/4th not sure... Beefy vs Mwakinyo perhaps, the Tanazanian actually looks pretty good from what I recall but is probably out of his depth against Smith (EDIT scratch that - just rewatched the Indongo fight and the kid's toast against Beefy) - maybe wait till the odds come up for that and Valenzuela vs Corrales before I make a final call though, maybe have em in it the dogs are closer that +300 or so.

10th is gonna be ladies night I reckon... both those are absolutely elite level AAA fights for the womens sport and I reckon they both carry enough intrigue and have enough at stake that we include em both... Champ vs #2 deciding women's supremacy at both 160 and 130 with a total of 7 titles on the line. Just wish they'd move to damn 3 minute rounds.

After that course a scattering of smaller fights but obviously GGG vs Canelo III, Franco vs Gonzalez, Shakur vs Conceicao Joyce vs Parker, Benn vs Eubank, Haney vs Kambosos II... enough to keep us going anyway.

Sounds like a great weekend to come! Odds are a little weird on Usyk vs Joshua. But I can’t wait. You putting it up? Personally I’d like to have Broner vs Figs on there! No telling what may happen there! It a do or be done fight for sure. I vote it in if others follow suit

Broner vs Figueroa actually is a really fun fight and despite their being no title on the line and neither being a recognised top 10 in any divison any more I might well have shoehorned it in on the name recogniton and relatively close odds if there hadn't already been 4 fights this week that were either for full titles or matched off two guys who are currently in their divisonal top 10 per Boxrec (and/or Ring). Would have have been fun to include Hrgovic vs Zhilei too but the same logic applies, no title and too far down the rankings.

As it is I put the thread up yesterday but BigPP ain't got round to sticking it yet it looks like:

BIGPOPPAPUMP jaded BostonGuy and chance of a little glue here gents?

Anyways.. fights we got for this week with rankings if in the top 10 per TBRB

                    Mundo (#5) vs Bauderlique (#10) @175
Usyk (#1) vs Joshua (#2) @HW (WBA, WBO, IBF)
Gutierrez (#2) vs Luis Garcia (#5) @130 (WBA reg)
Navarrete (#2) vs Baez(-) @126 (WBO)

I've a feeling the bookies may have Mundo a bit wide, although it's hard to tell given the level the Frenchman's fought to, not expecting Baez to give Navarrette too much trouble though.

Broner withdrew from the Figueroa fight citing mental health issues. What a surprise, huh?
