As it happens, I live in a city with a population of 6 million, which makes me proud to be from HK. It's a small place really so if anyone makes it big - it's a really big deal. Just like Joe is a big deal for the Welsh and Kessler a big deal for the Danes. Maybe that kind of underdog feeling doesn't translate to a population of 250+ million?
yeah it was win-win sort of. i just wished it was more competitive. it was sad seeing marco take a beating. his brother should've thrown in the towel a round or two earlier......

maybe it is hard for non-ethnic americans to have that feeling. americans dominate the sport. americans see americans in big fights all the time. that's why i feel for the welsh guys when they go nuts about joe. when was the last time a welsh was big-time in boxing? jimmy wilde?

it's always good to see someone with the same background as you succeed. it's human nature. you see someone who looks like you or come from the same place as you succeed you feel like you succeeded too.

imagine if a hong kong fighter became #1 contender at 135. i don't know if you are a pac fan or not but even if you were a huge pac fan wouldn't you root for that underdog hong kong fighter? i know if i was in your position i would.

I watch this sport, to watch good fights. Neither fighter knows me and neither fighter gives a **** about me. So, I don't see the need to give a **** about the fighter. If my father needs a lung, I doubt either of the ****s in the ring are going to give a ****. So, why should I TRULY care if he loses. I prefer certain fighters, for stylistic reasons, and stylistic reasons alone.
that's your preference and that's fine.

others have their own and that's fine too.

like you said we don't know these guys personally so we have to pick them for other reasons.

some fighters i root for because of style. some personality. some for skills. some for nationality/race.

      to each his own.

nothing wrong rooting for your home team (homeboys), its accepted practice in any sport (so why not in boxing), no matter how dire the situation is ...

but at the same breath you also choose other teams that you really like and make them second favorite or something...

its obvious I root for PAC, but ALONG THE WAY I ALSO ROOTED for erik, marco, juan manuel and Oscar Larios when they are fighting someonelse not named manny...

Doesn't matter why you like a fighter. Everyone has their own reasons and to each their own.

I like Mosley and Judah because of fast hands.

I like Mayweather because of technique.

I like Pavlik because I have no idea how a guy that looks like that can be that good.

And I like Tua because he is a fat slob who never reached his potential

          etc...

i dont think there is anything wrong with backing a fighter from your country. The fighter is representing your country so we could atleast support him. Just bacause i support the fighter it doesnt mean i think he is gonna win.
