Yo, Puerto Ricans... as much as you all are probably upset with this, it is true that Puerto Rico is not a country. Floyd is just correct about this.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth that is under the control of the United States. It is not exactly owned by the US, because they seem to have more privelages than the United States for the most part, but they are still not independent by a long shot.

For boxing however, country vs. country definately could apply.

I mean, Puerto Rico has seriously produced a hell of a lot more quality fighters than say... Greece.

Wow 21 pages holy **** gotta get my say in real quick. First off Puerto Rico can in fact sustain itself with its agriculture. Also Puerto Rico has a great tourist industry that brings people from all over the world. Its definately not like Mexico or some other countries that I've been to where people are so poor it brought tears to my eyes(not putting mexicans down but damn TiJuana is like wow). Now Racism in PR may exist but no where near like it is or ever was in the US. My great grand father was blue black, no question his decendants were african. However his wife was as white as a snow flake. In the US he would have been swinging from a tree if he even looked at a woman that looked white. In Hatillo, PR where my family is from my family ranges in color from dark to light and you never hear the word ****** or honkie. Negro and Rubio are terms of endearment not hate or anger. Don't hate on us because we found a way to co-exist peacefully. We are a common wealth no question, however in our hearts we are a country, a nation of proud people with a heritage thats passed down from generation to generation. Real talk, The US could take a page out of our book when it comes to race relations.

We got many many problems but racism sure as hell ain't one of them. We also have some great farm land and could survive off of our agriculture.

To shed some light on one of the problems we give tax breaks to companies that have plants on the island, they manufacture goods and ship them world wide. Those same items that are exported are then re-imported back to the island. To compensate for the break in taxes they hit those items (that were just shipped out) with a import tax causing the prices to sky rocket. Then because of all the shipping cost the companies increase their prices as well. What we pay dollars for here in the US cost double sometimes triple in PR. Thats real talk, normal everyday prescriptions that you get at a pharmacy cost triple in PR compared to the US and phizer has a plant there. Lets not even get into Motorcycels and cars. If I ran a business on the black market I'd make a killing on the island.

Unfortunately PR is not a country, it is a carribean Island which is a commonwealth to the USA. The only reason the USA does not "allow" our independance is because of our position on the map. From our little ass Island, we can land a bomb anywhere in the world. And thats a fact. and as just, for being such a small Island, it has produced a voluminace amount of champions. On the other hand USA is the most powerful nation and has not produced (measuring by size) the same amount of champions being that this entire Boxing sport was exposed here.

You are correct. Trinidad is Black, racially speaking. Most Puerto Ricans like to deny the FACT that there people are a mixture of Taino Indian, Spanish, and yes African. They don't want to be a associated with the stigma Blacks and African Americans have carried for centuries.

There are some Puerto Rican families who have avoided purposely mixing with any of the people of African descent(original ******) however, other families have mixed with those of African descent(original ******) that's why you have a Felix Trinidad, who in the United States, would physically be referred to as an African American. Miguel Cotto also carries negroid features....his hair is just as nappy, and lips just as big, as any African American in the U.S. Why you ask? Because his African ancestors gave him those physical traits.

Hell, even Ricky Martin has publicly said and I quote " Puerto Ricans need to respect their African Heritage", which unfortunately some don't. I think to some degree the Puerto Ricans from the U.S are the one's more prone to denying the African Heritage, simply because they've been raised in the most racist country on the planet...the good ol U.S...of A. In 2008 race relations are still ****ty in the U.S.

In reference to the thread topic, yes Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the U.S, a country ran and dominated by the U.S. Most Latin countries have and excercise their freedom and independence from any of the super power countries of the world. But in the case of PR, the U.S is still it's "Daddy".......excuse me "Papi"
