I'm the best in Britain, claims Calzaghe

Joe Calzaghe has started a war of words with fellow world champion Ricky Hatton.

The Welshman, who defends his WBO super-middleweight belt against Evans Ashira on Saturday, claims the fuss surrounding the Hitman's win over Kostya Tszyu was "a joke".

He also claims he is Britain's best fighter, even though Hatton is ranked the undisputed light-welterweight king and Calzaghe's divisional dominance is under threat from IBF champion Jeff Lacy.

"Ricky Hatton's a good fighter, but I'm a better one," he said. "He had a good win over Tszyu but the media hype surrounding it was a joke.

"Eight years I've been defending the title, he's just won it. Let's see if he is still a champion in four years, let alone eight."

The remarks will drive a further wedge between Frank Warren's Sports Network, who still promote Calzaghe, and Hatton who is facing a legal battle to break free from his long-time promoter.

The two fighters often appeared together to publicise Sports Network, but their careers have headed in different directions with Hatton now keen to crack America following his sensational summer success over Tszyu.

Calzaghe has the chance to prove his point against African Warrior Ashira in Cardiff on Saturday, when he needs to pull out an impressive performance and kickstart his career.

A late withdrawal from an all-British showdown with Brian Magee in March did the Welshman's reputation no good, while he struggled to overcome both Mger Mkrtchian and Kabary Salem in 2004.

He made amends with an impressive win over Mario Veit in Germany in May, but needs to dismiss Ashira to secure a November unification bout with Lacy, following the American's ruthless demolition of Robin Reid.

Ashira comes to the Cardiff International Arena with an impressive record of just one defeat in 25 fights, although his only previous world title tilt ended in a second-round stoppage at the hands of Maselino Masoe, when they met for the vacant WBA bauble.

Why's Calzaghe bitching about Hatton's win over Kostya Tszyu?... Sounds like sour g****s to me!

Sounds like someone is jealous! Thing is, Ricky comes across as a normal bloke that likes a pint, someone you can relate to. Plus, all things being equal, he beat someone who was supposed to rip his head off and piss down his neck. All I know about Joe is, he's Welsh. He needs to get some better PR going and stop the bitching if it means so much to him.

    Lol

Thats because it is, though I do actually think he is better than Ricky, but he's done nothing for a long time to claim that he is. I've lost a lot of respect for Joe over the years, through frustration more than anything else.

The best name he's got on his resume is Eubank and he was at the tail end of his career so I don't know what Calzaghe's on about, he's had the title for a long time but what's he done with it? Oh yeah he beat Will McIntyre, Tocker Pudwill & David Starie among other greats along the way

You know that comment about Hattons win over Tzsyu being over-hyped was the smartest thing I have ever heard Cal***he say.Either way he won't be the best in Britain anymore if he steps in the ring with My boy.

Disappointed with Joe's comments regards Ricky. Ricky is really a boxing gentlemen and refreshingly does not indulge in such talks. Look at how he handles himself regards the verbal **** that comes out of Junior Witters mouth, aimed right at Ricky.

Anyway, still support him. Here's his views on the bout with Ashira:

Calzaghe, 33, knows a big pay-day with IBF champion Lacy awaits him in November if he defends his WBO belt for a 17th time in Cardiff on Saturday.

"He's a decent fighter," said Calzaghe. "He's got nothing to lose so I'll have to send him packing and knock him out."

Kenyan Ashira, 35, has a fine 24-1 record at middleweight, but has fought only once in the 13 stone division.

That brought a sixth-round victory over Ruben Perez back in February 2003, but his last three fights (two wins, one defeat) have been at middleweight.

Ashira, now backed by renowned American promoter Don King, will be giving Calzaghe a slight weight advantage at the Cardiff International Arena.

The 5ft 7in Ashira scaled 11stone 12.2lbs while Calzaghe allayed fears he would struggle to make the weight by hitting the scales at 11stone 13.7lbs. One of Calzaghe's rivals, Nottingham's Carl Froch, is certainly not impressed by the champions choice of opponent.

"If you ask me Evans Ashira is nothing but an overrated middleweight," said the 28-year-old British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion.

"The last I saw of him he was getting knocked out in two rounds by Maselino Masoe in the weight division below Calzaghe.

"How come he gets to fight for a world title at 12 stone? I notice that like me Ashira appeared in the latest WBO super middleweight rankings.

"He is 10th, whilst I am 11th. What on earth has Ashira done to earn that position? He's not fought one single name at super middleweight.

"In my opinion this fight is an absolute mismatch and I don't think it is worthy of prime time TV exposure."

Calzaghe has paid no notice to such criticisms as he prepares to fight in Cardiff for the first time since February 2004.

And with a return to terrestrial television awaiting, Calzaghe has promised to give the viewers an explosive winning performance.

He said: "I've prepared well and I'm looking forward to be back in my favourite hunting ground.

"There's always a wicked atmosphere and I always fight a good fight."
