Canelo #1? Why not, he's as deserving as anyone else
The second fight was a one sided fight to Whitaker, the first one it was competitive. But Whitaker deserved the win but not 9-3.

Nah, they say he is the best. The Ring is sh.it.

I seem to remember Don King keeping Chavez away from Whitaker.

        - -Weeping for thee memories, eh?

Taylor was the bigger, stronger, faster and flashier, and to be fair he was all that before Chavez began his slow walk down.

It was suicide to put Pea in with him until Father Time was knocking on Chavez door, 89 fights. By that time, Pea with half his career fight totals, was already into the nose candy as was Chavez. It was a poor match of failing styles and not on my watch again list.

Do you have evidence of that?

What made him finally relent to them sharing a ring when Chavez was so far gone?

Don't really have physical evidence other than all the magazines from that era but I knew Duva(and all the other promoters) did not like to do business with King. It was near impossible to get neutral officials or a fair decision.

Chavez was a great fighter and King, as he often did wanted to build his legacy. King wanted Chavez to win titles in four weight classes. Duva's group knew that and Pernell went for the WBC welterweight title ahead of Chavez. Ironic but it was then King agreed to make the fight. Whitaker himself did not know he got the Chavez fight because his camp wanted him to focus on McGirt.

Chavez gone? 92-93 Chavez looked great and dominant. That is when they fought. His previous two fights were Haugen and Terrence Alli, both were destroyed by a dominant Chavez.

The Ring does not say Canelo is #1. They have him ranked #3 in the current rankings. Arguably slightly biased given that it’s a Golden Boy owned publication.

Very biased. They basically issued a statement that GB would not allow them to strip Canelo of The Ring belt.

                    - -Promoters squabbling is nothing new, but my point is Taylor laid the earliest blueprint on how to beat Chavez, and Duva as dumb as he was in the Taylor match finally lured JC in well past his best weight. Peas weakness was that he too often played the clown, so overall was a terrible fight to watch as were most Chavez and Pea fights afterwards.

Agreed on most here except, what bothered me about Whitaker. His drug abuse after the fight ruined him. Turned an exceptionally talented fighter into an ordinary fighter and naturally it went downhill from there.
