I don't believe his face ever hit the canvas looking at the film. He clearly lands on his forearms breaking the fall and than flattens out.

Now, given the quality of the film, it's not an impossibility. But I think he was ko'd clean as well.

When they use to have smokers in the athletic clubs and (illegally) watch these films they would create their own instant replay and keep running the film back and forth at the knockdowns, burning the film. This looks to have suffered that faith.
