“On July 29, 1988, Molinares faced WBA welterweight champion Marlon Starling in a title bout in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Molinares, trailing on the scorecards, dropped Starling with a devastating right after the 6th round bell had rung. Starling, who sprained his right ankle when he fell, was counted out by referee Joe Cortez. Molinares was initially declared the winner by knockout, but the contest would subsequently be declared a no contest by the the New Jersey Athletic Control Board.
However, the WBA upheld the original result and considered Molinares its champion.
Shortly after the bout, Molinares was hospitalized for severe depression, and he abandoned the WBA title in December 1988. He fought only twice more and was knocked out in both fights.
Whether he had predisposition for depression, I don’t know. He won the fight, and should have had the pleasure of enjoyment.
But, it’s not the first time I've read about scenarios like this hard blows to the head causing depressions.
The brain, it’s such a wonderful computer. But very fragile.

I was at that fight and it was a strange evening to say the least!
As for Molinares I think he fought two or three more times in Columbia as a Middleweight and was stopped all three times. I'm not sure he ever had management other than WBA officials allowing him to get the Starling match. His record is filled with no bodies and all the bouts in Columbia. Other than CoCoa Sanchez I never heard of anyone on his record and CoCoa was a trial horse guy usually at featherweight.
That was a horrble night the way Starling was treated that night was a disgrace.

the fight was declared NC he was allowed to keep the belt by the BS WBA! The fight was NOT a win..Last edited by Ray Corso; 08-19-2015, 05:51 PM.

Checked it on youtube.
It is an after-the-bell punch.
Could Molinares hold that punch back? Maybe.
But, what we see are (it seems) two exhausted men slugging it out at the end the 6th round. And you may excuse Molinares if not reacting directly to every sound in and around the ring (like the bell).
Should Starling have gotten the victory. You’re right, Ray, it was definitely his on a DQ.
