Makes sense....To me when one considers how many decent fighters there are that never get anywhere near elite status, much less beat an elite fighter. I have a problem calling these fighters that do well despite never competing at this level...."bad" or even "fair" and what about all those fighters that are talented, "good" but cannot fight the best?

Then you have a guy like Sanders who beat one of the best (and gave Vitali a run as well) now I could say he was good and better on account of his victory. I can live with that. In my mind I consider bad, fair good great.....biiiiig jump and then eliite. But great could be "very good" just the same.

We do get into some grey area when we discuss guys like Douglas and Sanders but...well its a matter of opinion. In my mind if douglas or sanders had trained harder, fought more consistantly, perhaps had better coaching they may have been elite.

Greatness is the level you perform at...In Sanders case he almost starched Vitali as well if you watch that first round.
If Sanders is great then Jhonny Gonzales must be 100 times that.

Did my point go over your head?

I agreed that the use of great maybe unwarranted and then gave a reason why I used that term. In boxing people have a category called "elite" in baseball when we differentiate Babe Ruth from Dwight Evans we call the Babe a great player and Evans was a good player. Most great ballplayers enter the HOF.

In this context when we talk about a fighter who has beaten the best, was a champ, and fought at the elite level, it seems appropriate when considering the context, i.e. compared to other fighters like Coetzee for example, to make a distinction between the category of good and elite.

Sometimes a logical conclusion defies common sense ....but I will modify and call Sanders very good.

And dude why the hard on for Sanders? Got something against the man for some reason other than his boxing skill?

Watch the Lewis Briggs fight. Its instrumental in showing a major difference between Vlad and Lewis. While Sanders caught Vlad and had him from that point on, Lewis also was getting caught by Briggs. Lewis protects himself well, there are some rocky moments during the fight and the way Lewis prevails says a lot about how great a fighter he was.

                How about Pierre Coetzer?

sanders had ONE good win! he beat wladimir klitschko. he never beat any other good HWs other then bert cooper when he was 30-10... sanders was a solid journeyman who moonlighted as a prizefighter. he wouldn't beat any other good HWs. he was a 4 or 5 round fighter at best. he had power & quick hands with nothing more to offer. he gets way too much credit for the wlad win & vitali gets too much credit for beating him. he wasn't even top 50 when he beat wladimir. he was the 11th choice for that fight. 10 guys turned it down so sanders figured why not? wladimir disregarded him as a threat & sanders got in the best shape of his career at 37. I guess wlad never watched the rahman\sanders fight... sanders was a JOURNEYMAN who feasted on lesser opposition...

lennox was down twice in his career by one punch knockouts by 2 big punchers... wlad has been down a dozen times at least... their chins are not anything alike as lewis can take a serious punch while wlad has a questionable chin...
