    Does Boxrec lie?

I just watched mike tyson vs ricardo spain..
This was tysons 4 pro fight
They announced ricardo spain and his record was 7 wins 0 losses.
I checked boxrec after and it says he had 2 wins 23 losses whats up with that!

It's not that far fetched to think fighters have uncompleted records, I'd favour what BoxRec has more than a pre-fight announcement.

EDIT: After having a look myself there is a note on Spain's first BoxRec recorded fight which says 'Spain's first fight in three years'.

Sounds like he went 6-0 with no boxrec record of it, fought once after 3 years out and won it. Then they fed him to Tyson....

Boxrec has no apparent motive to lie. I can't say the same thing about boxing promoters or managers.

Ring announcers often announce a record better than it is. I think they just read what the promotional company puts out. And the promotional company wants to make the matchup sound better.

Boxrec has no reason to lie because their reputation is always on the line. They do however make mistakes from time to time. This could be due to data entry or mistakes made by the reporter. I have many times offered them corrections with video from old bouts for proof. But but somewhere along the line they quit correcting their errors and it was no longer worth my time making video proof if they chose to leave it wrong. I know several fight collectors that also gave up on them in this regard. We chose to let them keep it wrong. That being said, it is still more accurate than any other online source for fight records.

Often times Boxrec has inaccurate stats as far as height and reach are concerned. But I don't think its because Boxrec is lying IMO its because managers or however are giving Boxrec incorrect info.

No it's more likely that they lied on the show to make the opponentseem more legit

Not intentionally per se, but given the delicate nature of collecting data, they can make mistakes.

This thread reminds me of something I saw a few years ago when I watched an early Mayweather Jr fight:
Mayweather fought 2 guys named Jesus Chavez and the first guy named like that was an early opponent in a non title fight in 1997; the ring announcer introduced him as a boxer with 22 wins and 16 losses as you can see here:
On boxrec the guy had 1 win and 13 losses at the time of the fight as you can see here:

EDIT: I just saw they lied about his age also: Jesus Chavez was 29 years old in 1997, not 24 as shown on the TV screen.
