ali would be killed had he lived in johnson's era!
i've been thinking, ali was way more defyant and flamboyant than jack johnson was, so if ali was champ in 1900s and 1910s instead of johnson, worst would happen to him than johnson. he most likely would have been killed very quickly IMO.
** That seems to be your biggest problem. This is a dumb thread. I don't think much of the way Johnson conducted his fight career, but outside the ring he was doing stuff that he could have been shot or lynched on the spot for.
Ali was never transporting a gaggle of white **********s across state lines, frequenting white cat houses, and speeding through local munis at high speeds in his sports cars like Johnson was doing during the Jim Crow era. Other than his Vietnam draft snafu, Ali was a very upright citizen although he did affiliate with a controversial political/religous cult which might have gotten him assassinated.
In Johnson's day that cult did not exist, nor did the Vietnam War, so Ali would have been one of those upstanding Christian black preachers speaking out against the evils of Johnson.
I remember seeing some program on television a few years ago, perhaps on EPSN or something, where they interviewed Ali on how he would have done against the great heavyweights of the past. Although Ali stated that he was "the greatest" and all that, he did mention that he thought he would have beaten all of the old time greats, but he wasn't positive. In regard to Jack Johnson, I recollect that Ali stating that Johnson was even more bodacious that he (Ali) was.
Johnson was more flamboyted than Ali ever was. Fast Cars, White Woman, and more white woman. lol. Talking smack vs Burns, Jeffies, or any other white fighter in the ring.
"Stop loving on me this way Mister Jeffies." OR Corbett will yelled, hit him with the left right, Than Johnson would do the left right and say, "See Corbett, it works".
Or the time he got pull over for speeded, and Johnson gave the cop 100$. The Cop told Johnson he could not break a 100$(The ticktet was 50$.)
And Johnson would say, keep it, I going to be driving though here again.
Ali never did anything, that would drive White America anger to the extant of Jack Johnson.
We talk about Ali saying, Moore in 4, or I take Liston in 6.
Johnson was doing that, while fight, asking his white women what round should I knock this fellow out, and they say, knock him out in the 5 round, and Johnson would knock him out in what ever round they ask.
I would not even compare Ali to Johnson in that regard.
keleneki, if you notice in that show featuring ali commentating on many of the old fighters in comparison, he gets noticably more humble and not as boastfull as the show furthers.
