    Ferdie Pacheco

I've watched and listened to this guy so many times over the years and he remains a total enigma. For the life of me I can't make up my mind whether to like or loathe him.

    Opinions and background info welcome.

I definitely didn't like the way he called Frazier a "dumb fighter" in that Ali/Frazier documentary. That was way too unprofessional and disrespectful to someone with the heart and level of Frazier. That made me automatically not like him but i did enjoy his commentary in some of the older showtime fights.

I've always thought the term "fight doctor" is weirdly paradoxical. Where the Hippocratic Oath stands within the context of the job I'm not entirely sure.

The thing about Pacheco is/was at times he could be extremely engaging, thoughtful and funny. And then periodically he seemed to suffer some kind of brain aneurysm and start spraying offensive bull**** like a garden hose.

An undoubted egomaniac. But one that's also an occasional guilty pleasure.

I always hated Pacheco. He is an egomaniac and his commentary on the Benn-McClellan fight was absolutely disgraceful. He maybe my least favorite boxing commentator ever.

For years I thought it was "Colonel" Bob Sheridan who called that fight. I can't imagine why as Pacheco and Sheridan sound little alike.

And yes, Pacheco was far too critical of Benn. Yes, he threw too many rabbit punches and a stronger ref might have jeopardised his chances - but I seriously doubt that fight fans with memories stretching back to Marciano and such would consider the bout excessively dirty.

Benn knew that to stand any chance at all he had intimidate the most intimidating puncher in the division. And McClellan didn't intimidate easily.

It's very possible that you did hear Sheridan. He calls a lot of fights for international TV, and often worked for Don King. Pachecho was on the Showtime broadcast. He actually accused McClellan of being a quitter. Not very impressive for someone who is supposed to a medical doctor.
