    Carlos Ortiz

What are your thoughts on this underappreciated fighter? One of the best(if not the best) of the 60s, and one of the few fighters to move down in weight and dominate a weight class.

notable wins over Vaillantx2, Rosi, Kosaka, Joe Brown, Persley, Elorde, Kenny Lanex2, Ismael Lagunax2, Sugar Ramos, Battlig Torres, Duilio Loi.

I presume you mean 60's yes?

    The general consensus is the Top 4 Lightweights of all time are;

    Duran
    Leonard
    Gans
    Whitaker

I personally have Ortiz at #4. Absolutely underrated even in terms of his Lightweight ranking IMO. I can't see how he can be considered lower than #4.JMO.

Carlos Ortiz was a beast. He would have whooped Pacquiao's butt in 2 rounds. I'm sure all *****s would agree.

oh yea sorry, turned the nine upside down

I feel like no one mentions Ortiz when he was not only one of the best Lightweights ever, but also a top 3 PRican fighter all time. its odd.

Jose Napoles also is someone who doesnt seem to get a lot of mention for some reason, despite his accomplishments.

          No worries.

I know, it is strange. I think there is no reasonable debate for him not to be a top 5 LW but I really can't see how he's lower than 4.

Jose Napoles is another one. I currently rank him in the Top 5 WW's. Where do you?

I honestly have no idea. Welterweight is one of the deepest divisions ever, and a lot of ATGs passed through it. plus theres a lot of fighters whose careers I havent studied very well, such as Mickey Walker and Griffith so I dont think it would be fair for me to judge at this point and time.

but from a purely 147lb standpoint, around #5 or 4 sounds pretty correct.

A very difficult fighter to rank, come to think of it so is Griffith. Ortiz was an excellent fighter and most definately an ATG, when he moved back up to face Locche in his hometown Luna Park, he was supposedly royally screwed in both the referees officiating and the final verdict.

I saw Ortiz fight when I first started following boxing. He was a major talent and belongs in the middle of any top 10 all time list for lightweights.

"Under-appreciated" is as good a phrase as any to describe Ortiz. Far too many amongst our younger fans just don't register the significance of those names you listed on his victim list, which is sad. I have had him down for many years now as Puerto Rico's greatest ever fighter (needless to say, a huge accolade, given the depth of talent from the Island), & he comes in at #6, all-time, at Lightweight. I consider 135lbs. the most competitive division of all-time for ring legends, so top-6 is huge praise from me, where I stand.

I could think of maybe fifteen or twenty fighters I have seen come & go in my lifetime following the sport to date I would honestly say I could watch them do their thing all day long. Ortiz is absolutely among them.

Out of curiosity Wild Blue Yonda, who do you rank higher than him other than Duran, Leonard and Gans?
