    Everybody thought Liston was older than he was when he was fighting. And some tend to believe that Jack Johnson shaved a few years of his age.

            Yeah, in all likelihood Liston was around 5 years older than his listed age. Liston wasn't even sure what his birthdate was. Another interesting case is Archie Moore: His mother stated he was around 5 years older than he claimed.

              Jersey Joe, and I wouldn't be surprised if many African fighters were too. I also believe that its likely Langford was younger than he claimed.

                Wasn't there a story about Hagler claiming to be older than he was early in his career to get into the Golden Gloves or some kind of amateur tournament where he lied because he was actually younger than the minimum allowed age?

                  Yes, it is indeed probable that many black fighters in the early 1900s lied about their age. Langford, Wills, probably Johnson.

                    Probably, or they might not have known...I mean were there birth certificates for blacks back then?
