    What happened to boxing?

What happened to this sport we all love to watch? Why all the sanctioning bodies and multiple title belts and disagreements keeping good and big fights from happening? Why didn't boxing just stay at one belt for each weight class and have the best fighters fight each other, instead of avoiding the best, because they might lose or might not look good? Why no more national TV coverage or prime time coverage? There's a channel for just about every sport, why not a boxing channel?

Nobody really sems to care about boxing anymore, outside of boxing fans either. It used to be when there was a big fight or title fight, you'd hear about everywhere and at every turn, it was all over radio and TV, why not more promotion anymore? Just about everyone used to know who the heavyweight champion was and even champions in some of the other weight classes, what happened to that?

Do you think boxing can ever return to its past glory? I mean, sure there were always bad elements, it was never perfect (corrupt promoters, thieving managers, organized crime), but there was still a buzz about boxing, the general public overall seemed to care about it a lot more. Do you think we'll see those days again or will it pretty much continue on the dark and murky path its going down now?

People never really knew much about boxing at any pt in history. They just knew about the Heavyweights. And given the current crop of Heavyweights, public exposure has gone down. Now Welterweights are the face of boxing.

I disagree. At one time boxing was the second biggest sport in America only to baseball and good shows were put on weekly. I blame the multitude of sanctioning organizations for watering down the coveted prize of world champion. Years ago people knew who all the champions were and the contenders. It just isn't like that now and I believe that causes the casual fan to lose interest. Jmo.

The whole boxing not being on network tv is a huge problem as the average person and casual fan aren't exposed to it as much now.

Why isn't it on anymore in the 1st place I was wondering but wasn't sure of the answer.

Is it just that some fighters demand too much money now for ABC or someone to pay them?

I would venture a guess that the networks are timid about broadcasting fights that aren't known to the general public. Im sure they could finance some of the lesser world championships, but without viewers knowing who these guys are why make the investment and take a chance? Unless you're a superstar fighters just don't have the following anymore for a regular network to make money. And if you are a superstar the network can't afford you. Like I said, and its just my opinion, but to many orgs waters down the talent pool and people just aren't as interested.
