they werent vastly more skilled.that notion is silly.they werent more skilled at all.majority of them would hardly be useful under the stricter rules of today and also vice versa.tougher yes, skilled,no.

hypothetically,if jack johnson invented heavyweight boxing, that means that every boxer who comes after him has a foundation to build and improve on.to say that nobody has improved on johnsons foundation is plain ignorant.boxing is much more creative now.show me 1 old fight that isnt full of holding and clinching, which are tactics that are frowned on today.ive never seen a perfect fighter.most unbeatable ive ever seen was mw roy jones.

By whom ? look at Ruiz , Hopkins and really a big part of the fighters to less extent. Watch McCallum-Jackson , Quarry-Shavers , and as you know Ali , Holmes , Wlad and Lewis. Almost everyone use clinching and holding today and then. Many fans actually appreciate it instead of frowning.

and who the hell actually gives ruiz props.people like norman stone more than ruiz.hopkins didnt start clinching till much later in his career.wlad hardly ever clinches nowadays as he just boxes from the outside.clinching and holding was excessive in those days, its not even comparable to modern times

He was notoriously shrewd at the negotiating table and fought for every last cent, even threatening to pull out of a fight 20 minutes before he was to enter the ring because he found out the fight was being broadcast overseas and he wasn't going to get paid for the rights to that. With this mentality, would Robinson fight 15 times per year right now if he was the best in the sport? Of course not.
I think he would still be very active. Robinson actually made enough money not to fight as often as he did, and he did start picking and choosing fights in his late 30's. However he thought it was detrimental for a fighter to stay inactive. He didn't get paid much for a lot of the fights he had against second raters, but he felt fighting every month would keep his skills sharp. When it came to fights against top ranked opponents though, you had better pay him or there would be no fight.

It's still possible for today's fighters to fight as actively as the old timers, for example Shannon Briggs just fought 3 times in a month, but those were untelevised bouts against lesser opponents. It's no longer possible to get big fights each month. You have boxers like Dawson and Cloud who fight about once a year, so there's really no way for a light heavyweight who wants to fight 12 times a year to get more than 2 or 3 meaningful fights. There are only 2 TV channels in the US that can afford paying for big fights and those are not about to broadcast boxing every weekend unless the sport gets very popular again.

It depends entirely on what you consider "modern". Walcott learned his trade in the 1930's, which was 80 years ago, but I doubt he would be outmatched by today's 190 lbers. Jersey Joe Walcott vs Marco Huck?

Prime Evander would be difficult for Walcott but Mormeck tends to run out of gas after 6 rounds. His aggressive style would also leave him open for counter punches, which suits Walcott fine.
