What was Mark Breland's downfall as a pro?

Obviously he had success as a pro,but he was touted as the very best from the very talented 1984 olympic team and was expected to achieve great things.

I'm not that familiar with his career so a little help would be appreciated.

I'll have to watch his fight with Starling sometime. He was well ahead on all scorecards so I'm guessing he had dominated him up until the stoppage?

Not really. He was probably winning, although maybe not as wide as the scorecards had it, but it was a tough fight and Breland just folded late.

I rank his fight with Aaron Davis as the best welterweight fight of the 90s.

Starling was a tremendously season pro and just too much for Breland at that stage of his career.. everything was in Starlings favour

No doubt about that.Although off the top of my head I couldn't name many high profile bouts that took place in that division in the 90's that were actually that great

Toughness, chin and as TheGreatA said, durability. He was OK for the first 5 or 6 rounds of fights but he'd get tired later on in fights. Didn't have good physical strength either, got pushed around quite a bit for such a tall guy. Had a great 1-2 combination though.

his flaws didn't matter much in the ams, but the pro game is a lot different
