    A PRIME Holmes vs Tyson

Ok, first thing obviously, I know these two met in 1988.
In that year Holmes was forced out of retirement (38 years of age), past his best and was aiming was to attempt to dethrone a prime Tyson who was basically knocking the **** out of nearly every opponent he was getting in the ring with.

So what if Holmes faced Tyson back when Holmes was in his prime, during the years in which he made 20 successive defenses of his title (I'm sure Tyson made a statement after the fight saying that against a prime Holmes - he didn't stand a chance - he was ''simply the greatest of his time.'' )
Holmes had one hell of a jab, which he partly demonstrated in the 4th round 88' fight with Tyson and showed some nifty footwork too, but due to his age was at a disadvantage.

So would a prime Holmes have used that jab to dominate Tyson from the outside in his younger years? Would Tyson's power have been too much for a prime Holmes?

Let me hear your opinions please.
    Cheers

Now I haven't seen much of Larry Holmes(Pretty much just the Ali & Tyson fight) but did he really ever fight anybody like Tyson? Somebody relentless, so much power, and always on the attack? And are we talking 12 or 15 rounds?

I think in 12 rounds Tyson probably could have caught him or eek'd out maybe a decision. But in 15 rounds I think if Holmes survived in the later rounds maybe he could have ousted Tyson late or won the fight late and took a decision?

But then again I've only seen the 2 fights so if Larry Holmes was this other amazing Heavyweight like Ali, Foreman, & Frazier around the 70's/80's, please don't be shy to enlighten me haha I'm not too informed about Heavyweight's except the very well known ones like the big fights in the 70's & 90's and today's sad group.

    Always love to learn more!

To see what Holmes was about I strongly advise that you watch the Ken Norton and Earnie Shavers fights, both of them are great classics.

Holmes was the complete package, he had one of the best heavyweight jabs ever (Joint 1st with Liston imo), great chin, incredible heart, decent power and hand speed. Great ring generalship, he knew what to do in situations and how to turn it back on his opponent to make them fight his fight, skill wise he's in the top 5 hw imo.

Really not sure how this fight would of gone if they was in their prime, I could see Tyson scoring a KD but for him to beat a prime Holmes I think he'd have to KO him which imo would be less likely then Holmes taking it on points.

Holmes was an incredible talent. He made 20 successive Heavyweight title defenses (second to Joe Louis who made 25 defenses of the title)
He was considered by many as one of the greatest Heavyweight champions in History. He had a superb jab (considered to be one of the greatest weapons in sports history), had heaps of guts and tons of stamina (was also considered the last great 15-round Heavyweight champion - well capable of going 15 rounds)

Holmes did face some heavy hitters which included Earnie Shavers in 1979. Shavers was a big puncher and had many many KO's to his record - he even knocked Holmes down during the fight, but was KO'd himself in round 11. Holmes beat another heavy hitter in Gerry Cooney in 1982. Cooney had a very powerful left hook, which stopped 22 of 25 opponents by knockout.

Holmes did beat Ali, but Ali was well past his best and Holmes could have beaten him at any stage during the fight. When Holmes faced Tyson, Holmes was forced out of retirement and accepted a heap of cash with it, but was well past his best, despite showing some signs of his best days with his jab and footwork.

I'd give Holmes the edge, although he struggled with lesser fighters than Tyson at times. It would depend on who brought their A game on the given night.

IIRC this has been beaten to death in many threads.

I happen to believe that Tyson is better than Larry and would beat him prime for prime.

There are a couple of previous Tyson vs Holmes threads, only a month or two ago, they are worth flicking back to.

I'm a big fan of both guys, very hard to pick a winner. I'd edge Holmes by points over 15 rounds but think that Tyson has a points chance in a 12 round fight, at least if he scored a knockdown or two enroute. I dont see a stoppage for either......not prime for prime!

I wrote this in an identical thread:

And yet Prime Tyson landed rights on the defensively inferior Green, Tucker and Bonecrusher Smith and didn't even knock them down. Holmes had a better chin than these guys too........... 1+1 rarely = 2 in boxing. Ha ha
