    Carlos Monzon - educate me.

Seriously. I'm not going to pretend to know it all.

All I know about the guy was that he was a dominant middleweight in the '60's-70's and he was born in Argentina.

    What are his best wins?
What would you consider his most impressive win?
What was so special about him?

I just got watching his fight against Jose Napoles and Valdez... and didn't see what made him so good, other than a pretty good right hand. He also seems to have a decent jab.

Yeah man, it was when micky was boxing.

Monzon was one of his fav's and flew out to the Argie jail, to visit Monzon and talked him into sparring him. This leading to Monzon knocking him out with a jab.

Thanks. I'll be watching those wins you mentioned.

A solid defence? I don't know, he seemed kind of easy to hit. I'll watch some more.

I think Bernard Hopkins outboxes him.

Monzon was a fighter whose effectiveness can't be truly appreciated without watching an extensive amount of footage on him.

I'd say that his most outstanding attribute was his ring generalship, he was always in control of the action and rarely exerted himself any more than was necessary. This often made for some unspectacular viewing for the spectators. Most of his fights may have lacked drama but he always got the job done in the end, like the Klitschko brothers today. He remained remarkably calm even in difficult situations.

Here's a highlight that I put together of his fights:

I'd say that my favorite performance of his was the second Bennie Briscoe fight. You can see clips of it at 2:15 of the above video.

No bernard hopkins has said many times his style does not match up well against monzon. Also monzon's defence was solid, monzon would lay back just enougth to make fighters miss then counter. He was no defence wizard but was no battling nelson either, some were in between.

Well, he has said that he'd have lost to Monzon but he has also said that he would have beaten Monzon. To me it depends largely on who would be able to control the fight, either Monzon with his consistent, thudding blows and sheer physicality or Hopkins with his craftiness and counter-punching.
