Zarate was simply a better fighter. While Calzaghe is a fringe ATG, Zarate was one of the best I've ever seen in the lower weight classes.

None of them have beaten in-prime greats, but one of them has beaten better fighters than the other.

One of them has made many more title defenses than the other.

One of them has beaten more hall of famers than the other.

One of them hasn't made title defenses against guys who's records were 2-3 and 1-4.
