What Is The Biggest (Non Heavyweight) Upset In Boxing History?
Collapse
-
I will list a few that are not in Ring's biggest upset annual list although I would agree that Pavlik vs Hopkins was a big upset as at the time "The Ghost " was seen as a big monster against the old BHOP. I only will pick non HW fights that came during my boxing era.
Chavez Vs Randall 1- Who would think after escaping Sweet Pea with a dubious draw and dodging a bullet with Taylor that Frankie Randall would get the first "Offiicial" win against JLC?
Naseem vs Barrera-This restored Barrera's career and very few thought the undefeated Prince Hamed Naseem would lose to Marco. Seeing the fight at the time it was a major upset as Prince was undefeated and fight was seen as a stepping stone for bigger things.
Pacquaio vs Barrera 1- Although he had already two losses against Junior Jones and a close decision lost to EM it was big upset for Pac to stop Barrera at Texas in front of a pretty much hometown crowd.
Gonzalez vs Michalczewski(sp?)- Few thought that the guy who some felt was ducked by Roy Jones Jr would get his first loss in germany by decision from a fighter who was easily defeated by Jones. It was big upset in the LHW division at the time.
In jones defense; i think he didn't want to fight Darius because he feared a BS decision lost like what happened to him in the Seoul olympics when his Gold medal was stolen by judges in favor of the local korean fighter. I remember seeing the fight live in the 88 Olympics and it is still one of most vivid olympic memories.

I was shocked every time Sven Ottke won, but that's another story..
Randolph Turpin over Ray Robinson immediately comes to mind, and I can also remember being shocked when Steve Cruz reduced Barry McGuigan to a heap of dung in the Mexican heat.. He'd been on a roll up until then, and had beaten much better fighters than Cruz..
John H Stracey out-toughing Jose Napoles for the undisputed Welter crown has to be another one.. Ok, Napoles was past prime, but this was 10,000 feet up a Mexican mountain somewhere, and Stracey was a ghostly white East-Londoner..
Napoles came out and battered Stracey in the first round, decking him, cutting him aswell as putting the head on him too..
Well basically, re-write the above sentence, and that's how Stracey came out in the 2nd, and kept pilling on the pressure until Napoles wilted in the 6th: but no way was Stracey supposed to win that fight..
Battling Siki KOing Georges Carpentier for the LH title was also considered a big shock at the time and has been mentioned so in many historical write-ups..
Carlos Mausa taking the WBA LWW strap from Vivian Harris was another strange one.. Mausa was crap, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing.. It was like Harris was in Alice in Wonderland while Mausa perfected his cricketing 'slow spin'
