For sheer raw power, Shavers. In most other areas Wilfredo Gomez was the better puncher, but not necessarily a harder hitter, as big of a puncher he was at 122. Still, it was mostly his overall ability as a boxer-puncher which is why he managed to stop almost all of his opponents, not pure power. When he got away from his boxing ability, he became a lesser fighter and he never truly carried his power up to 126 pounds.

Shavers on the other hand always relied on his ability to take out his opponent with one punch and skill-wise was not on the level of Gomez. Everything he ever accomplished was mostly because he could punch and little else.

I always thought Gomez was very underrated as a boxer because of his high ko%. Very skilled fighter.

I'd say he was at his most skilled when he was just 19-21 years old. Great footwork.

Unfortunately he turned into too much of a brawler/puncher later in his career.

I was watching Kostya Tszyu in the ams against Vernon Forrest. Seems like he did the same thing later in his career, relied more and more on power while his boxing skills atrophied.

I always thought Gomez got his knockouts because he outclassed fighters. Gomez was a great boxer at 122 but Shavers was a much harder puncher.

Gomez placed his punches much better than Shavers. Shavers was the harder hitter pound for pound as well as literally but Gomez knew how to make his punches count.
