ESPN Classic - Douglas vs. Tyson

Were the guys announcing the fight that replays on ESPN the ones who commentated for HBO that night? Was this an HBO fight or a pay-per-view? I was thinking this was an HBO fight, but I was too young to remember the fight.

Anyone know the names of the announcers covering the fight that shows on ESPN? Were they calling the fight to a wide audience or does ESPN just not have the rights to the HBO call?

I'm interested because the announcers on the ESPN replay are really, really bad.

    Thanks in advance...

I am pretty sure Lampley and Merchant called the fight the night it happened. I have no idea who was calling the fight for espn classic. I think that the footage may be different from what HBO aired. If you notice in one shot, the camera pans out behind the announcers table which is something you don't see during a lot of fights.

Don't know who calls the ESPN Classic fight, but it was Lampley and crew doing the original call on HBO. I have a tape of the fight from that night that I watch a whole lot and the shock, drama, and bewilderment voiced by Lampley and Merchant over what was happening in the ring adds so much to the fight. Get a copy of that one.

Note: It was not a Pay Per View fight. It was just a regular HBO fight that you didn't have to pay for (who would be buying a Tyson vs. Buster Who?! fight?). The fight was on a Saturday night up against the NBA All-Stars Slam Dunk Contest and I remember switching back and forth. But after a while you realized what was going on in the supposed-to-be-ho-hum Tyson fight was unbelievable. By round two or three the phone was ringing off the hook ("Are you watching this!?!") and everyone was locked onto the Tyson fight. One of the best sports viewing moments of all time. It was amazing to see that fight unfold live.

(neils, I think I chat boxing with you over at IMDB.)

The voice you probably heard was that of BOB SHERIDAN.
He always did a seperate broadcas(from the network) for DON KING.

You'll be witnessing one of the finest performances in heavyweight history.

                  Douglas......was near perfection that night.
