    Yahoo's Kevin Iole -1984 vs. 2009

Iole took the p4p best from '84 and matched 'em up with '09. Check it out.

Athletes in nearly every sport are superior today than those of the past. Athletes are, as a whole, stronger, faster, better conditioned and are able to use science and technology like never before to enhance their performance (and don’t get started with the snide jokes about chemistry).

I began to wonder how boxing’s best fighters would compare to the best fighters of 25 years ago. So what I did was to get the Ring Magazine rankings from 1984 and then go down the current Yahoo! Sports rankings and pick a fight.

I chose fighters who were in the same weight class and matched them, always striving to pick the highest-ranked fighter from a class in 1984.
but I'll give you a rundown of how he see's these fights.

Fight 1- Aaron Pryor vs. Manny Pacquiao - Pryor 10th rd TKO

Fight 2- Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Livingstone Bramble - Marquez by UD

Fight 3- Bernard Hopkins vs. Michael Spinx - Spinx by decision

Fight 4- Paul Williams vs. Thomas Hearns - Hearns by 8th rd TKO

Fight 5- Shane Mosley vs. Donald Curry - Mosley by SD

Fight 6- Miguel Cotto vs. Milton McCrory - McCrory by 10th rd TKO

Fight 7- Ivan Calderon vs. Sot Chitalada - Chitalada by UD

Fight 8- Vic Darchinyan vs. Richie Sandoval - Sandoval by 9th rd KO

Fight 9- Chad Dawson vs. Dwight Muhammad Qawi - Qawi by 11th rd TKO

Fight 10- Ricky Hatton vs. Billy Costello - Costello by UD

** Mr. Iole has a nice gig as a soft lad promoting soft nonsense for Yahoo. No doubt the marketing boys who've been in charge of corporate hierarchies hired him.

Ignoring his unproven claims over modern superiority and regulation changes that have increased the size of every division, just the casual way he dismisses the chances of his pick for losers is telling.

Marquez/Bramble is a pickem down to Marquez being at his expiration date.

Williams is so much bigger and stronger than Tommy it's ridiculous not to mention being more durable. Even Manny admitted last week he would steer Tommy away from Williams if they competed in their primes.

Mosely never met the consistent excellence of prime Curry. Moreover, Shane's entire career is shrouded in Balco controversy, not to mention he's also right at his expiration date. Curry had one punch showstopper power and brilliant boxing technique.

His love for Milt revolves around his being 6-1, big whoop. He and Cotto easily a pickem.

There are few fighters in history with IronBoy's freestylist wizardry and Chitalada ain't one of them.

Darchinyan is a bad, bad motorscooter and can't be counted out of any fight. Mr. Iole best keep his day job and hope it feeds the bulldog when he comes to collect Mr. Iole's losses.

Qawi a tough nut to crack, but way overrated. Dawson a ton more talent still has plenty to prove, but he's beat bigger quality fighters than did Qawi in his limited run in the division. I'd pick Dawson but would expect the odds to be even.

Hatton beat better fighters than did Costello, so dismissing Ricky is just more soft nonsense Mr. Iole fancies we would like to gum.
