Thanks for the clip. This was a very exciting fight by any time standards. Yet i have to admit, there is something that bugs me about Dempsey. His blatant refusal to take on the best black fighters of his time and him putting the heavyweight title on ice for three years really causes me to lose respect for him. He basically drew the color line that was made famous by white heavyweight champions before him. But i guess America loved him for being a living symbol of the roaring 20's.

But anyway, thanks for the clip!

He also made the Wills fight twice only the have the govenor of New York veto it. And yes, he avoided Langford the way Sam openly avoided Jeffries, yet did fight blacks on his way up. But not for the championship by no fault of his own.

''the was Sam openly avoided Jeffries''? Dosen't make sense, But Dempsey did get that put in his contract.

Langford was know for putting adds in the paper openly challenging "any man except Jim Jeffries".

Dempsey fought blacks before becoming champion and also employed a lot of black sparring partners. He twice signed to fight Harry Wills, only to have the politics of the day prevent it, with the race riots which followed Johnson-Jeffries still fresh in the memory. The two stumbling blocks were money for the fight and finding a town prepared to stage it. New York threatened to withdraw Dempsey's license if he didn't fight Wills, but also refused to stage it on their territory.
