Reversing the course of the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford mega-fight once more, UFC CEO Dana White revealed he stands again as promoter of the bout pitting the four-division champions.
At Saturday night’s UFC 316 event in New Jersey, White confirmed to reporters the speculation of his return that emerged late last month when the UFC moved its Noche event out of Mexico and off a pay-per-view conflict with Alvarez-Crawford on September 13 – Mexican Independence weekend.
Despite saying he can’t remember the last time he spoke to Saudi Arabia boxing financier Turki Alalshikh, White clarified, “I’m promoting the fight.”
In mid-May, Alalshikh’s team announced it would report back soon while announcing White and his new TKO Boxing promotion had been replaced by Saudi Arabia’s Sela – which isn’t licensed to stage fights in the U.S. – while also revealing there was no broadcast or venue deal in place for the high-profile super-middleweight clash.
Undisputed super-middleweight champion Alvarez immediately made it clear he wants the bout to occur in Las Vegas after headlining a disappointing, sparsely attended Cinco de Mayo card in Saudi Arabia on May 3.
White remained mum on the topic until Saturday night, saying that reflects the culture of the sport’s business dealings.
“They don’t say shit. Nobody talks,” he said.
By eliminating the pay-per-view head-to-head with his UFC, White returns to his leadership position with existing relationships that are expected to keep the fight in the U.S. – Las Vegas, specifically – and land a solid broadcast/streaming deal.
Insiders have told BoxingScene that the effort is to bring the bout to its originally planned destination, Allegiant Stadium.
That will require an agreement with the UNLV football program, which is slated to stage a home game against Idaho State at Allegiant Stadium on September 13.
Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, where Alvarez has fought 10 times after opening the arena to boxing in 2016, could also become the venue.
“I’ll let you guys know when it’s settled,” White said Saturday.
As for the streaming deal, insiders still believe White has the muscle to bring the bout to Netflix given TKO’s existing relationship with Netflix in its WWE deal.
Netflix enjoyed massive viewership with its November coverage of the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson bout.
If not, DAZN is the likely landing spot for Alvarez-Crawford.
