Jessie Vargas is planning to file a protest over Saturday's HBO televised outcome against former two-division champion Timothy Bradley. They clashed before a crowd of 4,711 in attendance at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The scores were 117-111, 116-112 and 115-112.
After losing the majority of the rounds, Vargas managed to badly hurt Bradley in the final minute of the fight. As he went after Bradley with an aggressive attempt to finish him off, referee Pat Russell jumped between to prevent Vargas from throwing further punches and raised his hands to wave off the action.
Vargas and his team erupted in celebration believing that Russell had stopped the fight. They were shocked to find out a moment later that Russell screwed up and stopped the fight early. Russell got confused, thinking he heard the final bell and stopped the final round a little early.
“Those last seconds cost me the fight. I was ready to finish him, and all I needed was one more shot when the ref stopped it. You’re telling me I wasn’t going to get one more punch in during the last eight seconds? I was going to knock him out,” Vargas said.
“The bottom line is I didn’t get to finish the fight. It’s not fair to me. It’s not fair to the fans. It’s a three-minute round, not two minutes and 52 seconds.”
