Gary Shaw, the American promoter for IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15KOs), told krikya360.com that his fighter will not run from a potential showdown with hard-puncher Gennady Golovkin (23-0, 20KOs).
Earlier today at the Koenig Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Geale ended the long reign of German superstar Felix Sturm (37-3-2, 16KOs) with a twelve round split decision.
Sturm was the WBA's "super champion" at 160-pounds, while Golovkin is the "regular" champion. A few days ago, the sanctioning body ordered the Sturm-Geale victor to face the winner of tonight's bout between Golovkin and Polish boxer Grzegorz Proksa.
The WBA wants Geale to face the winner by early December. However, that may not be possible due to the limited amount of television dates remaining on both HBO and Showtime.
Shaw is very open to making the fight, and so is Geale, but they are also open to other options.
"We are not going to run from Golovkin or anyone else. If Golovkin wins, I will have no problem at all making a fight with Tom Loeffler and [K2 Promotions]. If Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. wins [on September 15], I can make that fight with Bob Arum. If Sergio Martinez wins, I can go to Lou DiBella and make that fight. Maybe I will shock the world and take Daniel to 154, win a title there and then go back to 160," Shaw told krikya360.com.
In his own country of Australia, Geale has been overshadowed for a long time by other boxers, like Danny Green and Anthony Mundine. Now he might be the best active fighter in the country.
"Not only may he be the best active fighter right now, only time will tell if he's the best fighter to ever to come out of Australia. We don't know that yet. Time will tell and history will be written. He is the most underrated fighter in all of Australia, for sure," Shaw said.
"I think it's time for the Australian press, and the press worldwide, to give Daniel Geale his just due as a great fighter. I believe Geale is the only fighter in Australian [boxing] history to win both of his titles on German soil. I have never promoted a fighter like Daniel Geale."
