Robson Conceicao, perhaps Brazil’s most accomplished boxer ever, secured the 2016 Olympic gold medal in Rio and currently holds the WBC junior lightweight title. A controversial decision cast a shadow over his July 6 victory against O’Shaquie Foster, but it hasn’t dimmed his flame as he seeks to garner more respect for his homeland in boxing.

After three previous failed attempts, Conceicao (19-2-1, 9 KOs) fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a titleholder – just weeks before Brazil seeks further Olympic success in 2024.

“I am very proud of my performance and believe I did enough to win the fight,” said the 35-year-old Conceicao via translator. “I understand that some may disagree with the result, but it was a fair decision by the judges. I respect everyone’s opinion, but I am focused on the future and the next stages of my career.”

Brazilian boxing is riding high on the strength of its recent Olympic successes, including Conceicao’s triumph in Rio. Beatriz Ferreira, the current women’s IBF lightweight titleholder, is a favorite in her division for the Paris Games. Brazil, known historically for Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA champions in the UFC, is now fostering boxing contenders like Patrick Teixeira, who recently held a title, along with Conceicao and Ferreira.

Conceicao aims to bolster perceptions of Brazilian boxing and inspire the next generation of his fighting countrymen.

“Boxing in Brazil is gaining prominence,” Conceicao said. “Our world titles and Olympic medals showcase our talent. I foresee a bright future for Brazilian boxing, with increased youth interest and improved training conditions.”

Conceicao embraces his leadership role in Brazilian boxing, eager to inspire future generations as the 2024 Paris Games approach.

“My plans include using my platform to promote boxing and inspire young athletes,” Conceicao said. “I want to support social and educational projects that encourage sports and healthy living. Additionally, I will defend my title proudly and continue to represent Brazil globally.”
