Officials in Puerto Rico are taking every precautionary measure to stay ahead of the coronavirus pandemic.
That measure has extended to the boxing schedule and the island's first officially canceled event.
The March 27 edition of 'A Puño Limpio' has been suspended, Puerto Rico Boxing Best Promotions confirmed on Thursday. The eight-fight card was due to take place at Cancha Ruben Zayas Montanez in Trujillo Alto, which was to be headlined by local junior welterweight prospect Jean Carlos 'Lobo' Torres (18-0, 14KOs).
"After analyzing all the scenarios PRBBP and Spartan Boxing, we decided to suspend our March 27 event in accordance with everything that is happening with this coronavirus pandemic," Iván Rivera, president of PRBBP confirmed on Thursday. "We are trying to prevent situations with this disease."
The news comes just as citizens in Puerto Rico continue to rebuild from a series of natural disasters, including several earthquakes which devastated the southern portion of the island. Two cases of COVID-19 have been reported from Puerto Rico, both coming from visiting travelers. An Italian woman and her husband were quarantined after she exhibited symptoms of a "fever, dry cough and respiratory distress" according to a statement from Governor Wanda Vasquez.
According to reports, the woman and her husband arrived in San Juan from a cruise ship which set sail in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
The most recent case involves a described "partygoer from Panama" who—according to the Miami Herald—traveled to P.R. last Wednesday for an intended week-long trip which included his partaking in the annual National Day of Salsa, which was attended by more than 25,000 people. The same report from the Miami Herald indicates that the gentleman admitted to attending the festival despite having a fever, leaving the party due to feeling ill and who has since flown home to Panama on Monday.
Due to the uncertainty that exists in Puerto Rico and the World and taking all preventive measures for the coronavirus pandemic, PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) and Spartan Boxing decided to suspend the show of the series "A Puño Limpio", which would take held on Friday, March 27, at the Rubén Zayas Montañez Coliseum.
Amidst concerns of boxers and their respective camps traveling from other countries, proactive steps were taken to ensure that everyone involved literally lives to fight another day.
"We had fighters who came from out of the country and it would not be our responsibility to expose people to any negative condition," notes Rivera.
Torres and Vega Alta's Nicklaus Flaz are among the series regulars who were due to appear on the card. Flaz (9-1, 7KOs) was due to collide with fellow Boricua and comebacking welterweight Jorge 'Machito' Maysonet Jr. (16-2, 12KOs) in the evening's chief support. Also due to appear on the card was Joseph Adorno (14-0-1, 12KOs), an unbeaten lightweight prospect from Allentown, Pennsylvania who hoped to move past his eight-round draw with Hector Garcia in his most recent start this past January in Atlantic City.
A decision has yet to be made on whether this event will be rescheduled.
"Soon we will be providing information on the upcoming dates of our events," promised Rivera of PRBBP's future schedule.
