Moscow, Russia - WBA Gold super flyweight titlist Mikhail Aloyan (7-1, 1 KOs) got the better of the unusually tough Tanzanian boxer Mchanja Yohana Bakari (12-3, 10 KOs) in a fight, which was considerably harder for the winner than originally expected when comparing both fighters' records and backgrounds.
Aloyan, 32, prevailed with identical scorecards from all three judges: 99-91, though BoxingScene had it closer: 98-93.
Aloyan, a two-time amateur world champion and 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist (also 2016 Rio Olympics finalist who saw his silver medal discarded based on drug violations), was the bigger fighter of the two, while Yohana failed to even to get past the flyweight limit.
Aloyan started fast but Yohana, 23, almost immediately calmed the Russian down with a hard counter right hand, which slightly wobbled Aloyan. Shorter but harder-punching Yohana continued to be dangerous in the second round, once again catching Aloyan with some well-placed sneaky blows.
The amateur stalwart turned back the tide in the third and continued to dominate throughout the fifth. He circled around Yohana, connecting with his southpaw right hook and also using an educated right jab to pepper the Tanzanian fighter. Yohana exploded with hard counter shots but landed less than Aloyan and couldn't make him a stationary target.
Yohana again thrusted into the fight in the sixth round and was also very dangerous at the beginning of the seventh, stinging Mikhail with several hard right hands. Aloyan took the remainder of the fight, pinning Yohana to the ropes. In the eighth Yohana was hurt by some well placed body punches.
The ninth was Yohana's best round of the encounter. He rocked Aloyan early on and continued to deliver heat for well over a minute. Aloyan went into survival mode but slowly recovered and finished the rounds strong. Both fighters did good during the final tenth round but Aloyan had the edge.
