Mikaela Mayer has trouble imagining Alycia Baumgardner would be content to deprive their rivalry of a rematch.

Mayer (17-1, 5 KOs) and Baumgardner (13-1, 7 KOs) met in the ring last month in a highly anticipated 130-pound unification bout. After 10 competitive rounds, Michigan’s Baumgardner was crowned the winner, adding Mayer’s IBF and WBO titles to her existing WBC, IBO belts. Many in the boxing world believed the fight could have gone either way.

Baumgardner has made it clear she is now looking to unify all four belts of the division against WBA champion Hyun-Mi Choi of South Korea and has repeatedly mocked Mayer’s calls for a rematch. The two were engaged in a testy, and at times confrontational, war of words leading up to their October fight, which was the chief support bout to the undisputed middleweight unification fight between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall, which Shields won resoundingly on points.

Mayer said she believes she does not lack for opportunities, even with a loss, and named lightweight champion Katie Taylor as a possibility. However, the California native said she did not want to move up until she avenged her loss to Baumgardner. Mayer said she thinks Baumgardner would be remiss to shun a rematch, especially since, according to Mayer, many people believe it was a disputed win.

“I believe I’m next in line for that, but I don’t want to lose my position at 130 at the same time, because I do believe I do deserve a rematch,” Mayer told FightHype.com. “And not just for me. If Baumgardner was a true champion, she wouldn’t want to leave it in suspense.

“There’s a lot of doubters. If she really wants to make that (win) sound, then she should rematch me. The fans want it. It’s about the fans, right? The fans want it. That’s why I ended up pushing for the fight in the first place. I believe this is the era of women’s boxing where we can change the narrative and we can make the big fights that fans want to see. So, I think she should live up to that and rematch me. I don’t think she would come out on top because I’m going to come in there with a chip on my shoulder, but I think the fans want to see it.”

Mayer noted that she understands that the undisputed match with Choi remains Baumgardner’s priority. But Mayer said she wants Baumgardner, a client of promoter Eddie Hearn, to be more receptive to a rematch. Recently, the WBA ordered a fight between Baumgardner and Choi.

“She can go ahead and try to get that Choi fight, but let’s not mess around,” Mayer said. “Let’s get these fights done. Don’t immediately after the fight on the microphone and say she’s not getting a rematch. Nobody wants to hear that.”
