An upgrade to the upcoming Mexican war between former world welterweight champion Antonio Margarito and Ramon 'Inocente' Alvarez, who is the older brother of two-division world champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
The fight takes place on August 13 at the Convention Center Rosarito in Baja California, Mexico with Azteca 7, La Casa del Boxeo, handling the television. Zanfer Promotions President Fernando Beltran is staging the event.
">The fight was previously reported to be a ten rounder, but now Margarito (39-8, 27 KOs) and Alvarez (23-4-2, 15 KOs) will collide over twelve rounds for the WBC super welterweight Americas championship.
In his last fight, Margarito had a thrilling win over Jorge Paez Jr. He was forced to get off the floor to fight his way to a unanimous ten round decision at Arena Mexico City on March 5. Margarito entered the fight after a retirement from boxing of almost 5 years. Margarito is training in San Diego for the fight.
Alvarez (23-4-2, 15 KOs), a fan favorite in Mexico, is coming off an impressive streak of 10 wins including dominating decision over Omar Chavez, the younger brother of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
"I have always wanted the fight with Margarito, and now thanks to Fernando Beltran it will happen. It is an opportunity for my career and I have no doubt that I'll win regardless. I will go out there and give everything as I always do," Alvarez said.
"He's a warrior in the ring, he's very strong and has power, but I have faith in my talents and my preparation. Defeating Margarito will lead me to the super welterweight world title and assist me in achieving my dream."
Also on the card, Pedro ¨La Roca¨ Campa (21-0, 17 KOs) landed the co-featured slot in a battle against David ¨Orly¨ Bency (17-5-, 10 KOs).
Edivaldo ¨Indio¨ Ortega (24-0, 11 KOs) will face Emmanuel ¨Vaquero¨ Navarrete (14-1, 13 KOs), while Jaime Munguía (16-0, 13KOs) goes against Fernando ¨Chino¨ Valencia (12-2, 3 KOs), and Julio ¨Thor¨ Barraza (18-0-1, 15 KOs) tackles Víctor ¨Terry¨ Rangel (14-4-3, 4 KOs).
