Luke Watkins looks set to face Lawrence Okolie in the coming months after a deal was agreed for the fight.

The Commonwealth cruiserweight champion was last in action in December when he retained his belt against Mike Stafford in Leicester.

Watkins will face Okolie, the WBA Continental champion who knocked down and outpointed Isaac Chamberlain at the O2 Arena in London back in February, on a Matchroom Boxing card.

The contest has been repeatedly touted over social media over the last few months, with Watkins and his trainer, Paddy Fitzpatrick, as well as Okolie all making clear their preference for the scrap.

Okolie’s promoter Hearn was the only man left to have his say and the Matchroom chief revealed on Tuesday night that he has been in touch with Fitzpatrick to finalise a deal.

Boxing Scene understands the fight could take place as the main event of a JDNXTGEN card at Bethnal Green’s famous York Hall venue on June 6, a Wednesday night, and that it would be screened exclusively live on Sky Sports.

“Terms agreed tonight for [Lawrence Okolie] to face Commonwealth champ [Luke Watkins] in early June,” Hearn tweeted. “More show details announced this week.”

Further details will be revealed in due course.

IN OTHER NEWS: Glenn Foot could fight in the North East in a couple of months’ time.

The Commonwealth super-lightweight champion won the aforementioned belt with a stoppage victory over Jason Easton in March.

Foot, 30, is from Sunderland and has a ledger of 22-3 with seven quick.

He returned to win the rainbow belt after being outpointed by Josh Leather, 26, of Guisborough in Yorkshire, back in November at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, exclusively live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

But there is a chance that he could return to the same venue against the same opponent after the rematch was ordered by the British Boxing Board of Control for the vacant British super-lightweight title after it was relinquished by Jack Catterall.

Their last fight was on a Frank Warren-promoted card, with the vacant IBF European trinket at stake, but the return could happen on Sky Sports.

Eddie Hearn recently announced a show for the same venue that will happen on June 16, with Lewis Ritson defending his British lightweight title for the third time against mandatory challenger Paul Hyland Jr. as the main attraction.

And he admitted at a press conference in the city on Tuesday that he would “actively pursue” the possibility of adding the second fight between Foot and Leather to the card.

“I remember having Glenn Foot on one of our Prizefighter shows,” said Hearn. “He lost to Sam Eggington and it looked like his career was over and now, all of a sudden, he’s Commonwealth champion and also challenging for the British title.”

The card has four other title fights already made for it, with a whole host of undercard additions to be confirmed in due course.

WBA International welterweight champion Josh Kelly will challenge for his first major title when he takes on Kris George of Australia for the Commonwealth crown, while Darlington’s Stuart Hall will challenge Gavin McDonnell for the WBC International title at super-bantamweight.

Arfan Iqbal will fight Simon Vallily in a rescheduled defence of his English cruiserweight title and South Shields’ Anthony Nelson will fight for the second time in seven weeks after a two-year layoff when he takes on former world title challenger Charlie Edwards for the vacant WBA Continental super-flyweight title.
