Unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Juan Pablo Romero will face gatekeeper Sergio Torres tonight, promoter Oswaldo Kuchle confirmed to BoxingScene late Friday night.
The 10-round bout will take place at the Estudios Televisa in Mexico City and will air on TUDN (11 p.m. CT) throughout Mexico and the United States.
At Friday’s weigh-in, both fighters weighed in at 139.7 pounds.
Romero (12-0, 9 KOs), who resides in nearby Villa del Carbon, last fought on November 9 of last year, stopping Ranses Payano in round 2. The win over Payano was Romero’s fourth in a row by knockout.
“I had great preparation (for the fight),” said Romero, who is a Second Sargent in the Mexican army. “I’ve envisioned a difficult fight and that’s what we ultimately expect. Like all other previous opponents, Torres wants to take my unbeaten record away from me. He is experienced and we’ve studied him. We know what we have to do to be careful and how to attack (Saturday night).”
The 30-year-old Romero represented Mexico at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Torres (27-8-1, 21 KOs), who resides in Tampico, Mexico, has not fought since stopping overmatched Rafael Bruno Lopez in the opening round on August 3 of last year. The victory took place over two years after losing by unanimous decision to journeyman Carlos Jimenez.
The loss snapped a three-fight winning streak for the 33-year-old.
In the co-feature that will feature junior featherweights that reside in Mexico City, Bryan Mercado will square off against Alejandro Gonzalez in a 10-round bout.
The hard-hitting Mercado (17-1, 14 KOs) defeated Ricardo Garcia Lozano by unanimous decision in his last bout on September 26. Mercado has won his last 16 bouts since losing by split-decision to Rigoberto Nava in September 2015.
Gonzalez (7-1-2, 4 KOs) last fought on November 23 of last year, knocking out Jose Armando Valdes in round 2. The biggest win of Gonzalez’s career took place in his previous fight on October 5 of last year, defeating former world junior bantamweight titleholder Rodrigo Guerrero by technical decision.
Also on the Promociones del Pueblo card, junior welterweight prospect Eduardo Martinez (5-0, 4 KOs) of nearby Cuernavaca will face Victor Hernandez (4-1, 2 KOs) of Ciudad Del Carmen, Mexico in a six-round bout.
