Mohegan Sun, CT. - WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) picked up the most significant win of his career with a twelve round unanimous decision over the ultra-game Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-3, 10 KOs).
The scores were 116-112, 117-111 and 118-110.
Charlo was working a jab at the start of the first. For most of the round, it was Charlo's jab doing most of the work. The second round was closer, with both having their moments.
They were getting more active with their punches in the third. Near the end of the round, Charlo rocked Derevyanchenko and nearly sent him down with a few follow-up shots. They were trading punches at the start of the fourth. They were both throwing a lot of shots, with Charlo being more accurate.
A cut opened up around the right eye of Derevyanchenko in the fifth. He began to throwing a lot of punches in that round with both hands. Derevyanchenko was doing well at the start of the sixth and was really taking the fight to Charlo with punches to the head and body. Charlo was battling back with the action breaking out.
The trading continued in the seventh, with Charlo landing the harder punches. Derevyanchenko's face as really falling apart, but he was still very much in the fight. Derevyanchenko came roaring back in the eight round with his body work. He was also doubling up on his punches to the head of Charlo. At the end of the round, Charlo once again rocked Derevyanchenko.
Charlo with the jab as the ninth started. He was boxing and connecting with big punches when Derevyanchenko would come inside. Both of Derevyachenko's eyes were swelling up at this point. Both were throwing hard shot at the start of the tenth. Derevyanchenko was making things close near the end.
Charlo was jabbing and connecting in the eleventh. Derevyanchenko was doing well, but Charlo was doing the better work. They battled for most of the twelfth, with Charlo appearing to hurt Derevyanchenko in the closing moments.
