Hasanboy Dusmatov couldn’t ask for a better start to his pro career.
The 2016 Olympic Gold medalist from Uzbekistan picked up his first win, scoring a 2nd round knockout of Mexico’s Jesus Cervantes in their junior flyweight bout Saturday evening in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. A left hand to the body puts Cervantes down midway through round two.
Dusmatov is one of seven boxers to have captured a medal for the 2016 Uzbekistan Olympic Boxing team in Rio, yet has seen five teammates turn pro with two already having arrived on the title stage. The 26-year old seems destined for a similar fate, his deep amateur pedigree already translating well in the early stages of his pro career.
Aggressively matched in an eight-rounder for his first start, Dusmatov—who now trains out of Indio, California—looked to make a statement from the opening bell. Left hands landed frequently and with conviction, with Cervantes spending the brief affair fighting in reverse.
The fight came to a sudden end in round two, when Dusmatov ripped a left hand body shot which hit Cervantes (9-8, 5KO) on the sweet spot and caused him to roll over in agony on the canvas.
The severity of the blow was enough to prompt an immediate stoppage.
Dusmatov—who is managed by Vadim Kornilov and aligned with Russia-based World of Boxing—improves to 1-0 (1KOs) with the win. The southpaw will be a prospect to watch in the always loaded junior flyweight division—and perhaps a contender if the career trajectory of several of his past teammates are any indication.
The bout served as part of the Golden Boy Fight Night series, streaming live on Golden Boy Promotions’ Facebook page in supporting capacity to an all-Mexico clash between resurgent Pablo Cesar Cano (32-7-1, 22KOs) and Robert Ortiz (35-4-2, 26KOs).
