Alfonso Gomez and Yoshihiro Kamegai both made their contracted weight for Friday's 10-round headliner at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, Califronia.
Gomez came in at 149.2 lbs., slightly lighter than Kamegai, who tipped the scales at a fight-ready 149.6 lbs. The bout airs live on Fox Sports 1.
Both fighters enjoyed different means of success at unexpected moments in 2014.
Gomez (24-6-2, 12KOs) was thought to have been done with the sport before surfacing as an opponent of choice for streaking welterweight Ed Paredes, who was unbeaten in his 15 previous starts heading into their July '14 clash. Meanwhile, Gomez had lost two straight and was out of the ring for two years prior to their Fox Sports 1-televised bout.
Proving why fights are in fact fought in the ring and not on paper, Gomez offered one of his best performances in recent memory, soundly outpointing Paredes over 10 rounds. The win was his first in over three years, a moment of redemption for the scrappy boxer from Mexico, whose career-defining moments were his run during Season One of The Contender and an upset knockout win over Arturo Gatti, the last fight of the late, great Hall of Fame slugger's career.
Kamegai (25-2-1, 22KOs) doesn't carry anywhere close to the same backdrop, but turned heads with his brave showing versus Robert Guerrero last summer. The knockout artist from Japan came up short in his 12-round slugfest with the former three-division titlist, but won the fans over in his thrill-a-minute Showtime-televised performance.
The bout was his third appearance in Calfornia, where he remains winless (0-2-1 overall) though obviously hopes to change his luck on Friday. His lone two wins on U.S. soil both came in Las Vegas, including a 10-round decision over Oscar Godoy last December.
