Khabib hints at not giving McGregor title shot if he beats Tony Ferguson

Last week, the UFC announced that interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. At the moment, the fight will be contested with Ferguson’s interim title on the line, but UFC President Dana White has made it known the if actual lightweight champion Conor McGregor doesn’t return to the UFC soon, the organization will strip him of the belt and allow him first crack at the title whenever he chooses to return. But that might not be so easy.

Speaking at the MetroPCS UFC 220 Livestream over the weekend, Nurmagomedov said that after he beats Ferguson, McGregor will not be a top priority for him and that the current lightweight champion will have to “get in line” to earn a shot at the title.

“I’m gonna make humble Conor,” said Nurmagomedov. “I’m gonna beat Tony and I’m gonna say to Conor, ‘Hey, you have to go into the line,’ because you have to deserve this. He has only one fight at 155. I am 25-0 at 155. Undefeated. Undisputed.

“I’m going to take this belt, and we’ll see what happens.”

Nurmagomedov’s willingness to pass on a McGregor fight stands in stark contrast with almost every other person in the sport. Since his ascension to global superstar, McGregor is by far the most common name mentioned by fighters looking to score a big payday. But Nurmagomedov says he’s not interested in “money” fights, only in his legacy.

“I understand this. Fighters try to make money with Conor but I’m not in this sport to make money. I can make money with other stuff in Russia, like a lot of money. I come here to make history, for my legacy.”

Before Nurmagomedov can ever reject McGregor though, “The Eagle” has to get through Ferguson, who is riding a 10-fight win streak in the UFC; and though Nurmagomedov respects Ferguson as the “real champ” he’s not too worried about how the fight will go, saying all he has to do is show up and he will “humble” Ferguson.

“I have a tough opponent,” said Nurmagomedov. “Tony Ferguson, for my opinion, he’s real champ, and I’m gonna smash this guy. This is my plan. I’m going to smash this guy, make this guy humble too because he’s a little bit ******. He’s tough opponent, very good fighter, but personality, I don’t like him.

“I have to come to show [with] no injuries, make weight, and that’s it. Somebody has to close us inside the cage and that’s it. I’m gonna beat him everywhere. My grappling is a different level than him. He thinks he’s grappling with Eddie Bravo and he’s good on the ground but I’m gonna show him.”

Nurmagomedov fights Ferguson at UFC 223 on April 7 at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Ha ha lol. He might say this now but if he becomes champ and McGregor comes knocking their is now way he can refuse either from 1- Dana enforcing the issue( threatens stripping belt).
2- He sees the $$$ and comes to his senses.
Either way if khabib is champ and McGregor wants that fight it will be were are we fighting.

lol get real. He's just trolling and probably just trying to play dumb to get more money but no way he turns down that fight. He is absolutely the worst style match up for McGregor. Easiest massive payday a boring fighter could ever get.

That's like Thurman saying - if Mayweather returns I won't give him a shot at my belts.

Khabib doesn't need the money so doesn't kowtow to the UFC machine like so many others. I respect that. I also appreciate that he had the balls to say McGregor vs Alvarez was a fixed fight. He has Russian Mafia money, he's set for life. His UFC paydays don't do much for his overall wealth.

Nothing like a potential Thurman/Mayweather situation as the UFC don't pay like boxing.

I actually called the result of Alvarez/McGregor a few days before it happened and said the UFC couldn't risk another Diaz fiasco and they needed McGregor to win dominant to be able to hype up a potential $$$$ fight with Floyd Mayweather. Diving Eddie did a great job of putting over the UFC's biggest star and was well rewarded for it.

Khabib is a beast. I had money in Ferg to beat him when they were originally scheduled as I knew Ferg would win due to the shape Khabib was in. Unfortunately for my bet but fortunately for Khabib's health the fight was cancelled due him being hospitalized (he was in even worse shape than I realised).

Khabib however I believe will be on weight properly for this title fight and will be hard as hell to beat.

Guy wrestled bears... cmon... that's Zangief type ****. What a boss.

Khabib's manager now claims that his fighter will retire after facing Tony and McGregor. Two more fights if they can pull it off

Hmm, that'd be nice to see. With how injury prone he's been and being able to cash out on a Conor fight, sounds like a good idea. Could end up pulling an Andre Ward and retiring unbeaten once he reaches the top.

If Khabib does that and retires undefeated it will be hard to put another UFC lightweight above him and will secure his legacy which Khabib seems to crave.

I think it's a smart idea, the guy gets injured almost as much as his teammate Cain. I honestly don't see him making many hypothetical title defences without injury and being forced to relinquish the belt so that might be a wise end game for team Khabib.

If he mauls the UFC's cash cow in his final fight it would be a good **** you to the UFC and fitting way to end it.

...he needs to stay healthy and make weight for Tony first though... I won't fully believe this amazing matchup is happening until I see both guys in the cage. I got hyped up before but was letdown by Khabib. I'm cautiously optimistic that this time the fight happens but after Khabib was pulled the last time I can't get pumped yet.

I still have serious doubts that McGregor will ever fight again, and not against him if he does.

Then that's on McGregor. Khabib will probably look for another big money fight then if Conor doesn't come back to cash out on.
